re: I don't understand
You are so right. Why should anyone keep coming back to this site or pay any attention to this contest if somebody can just delete the entire message board if they feel like it. Have you ever seen any other message board where anyone could edit it? Triple M, why such a poor design?
05/24/2009 9:23AM
On your Mark...
Yeah Saigon, that was a tough one and you did it up. Strong work!
05/24/2009 3:51PM
Unpredictable
I have to give points to Scott and Whitney for being unpredictable. Everyone else's songs were more or less the same as they have been in the previous weeks.
05/24/2009 4:01PM
Slow to Anger
What a refreshing new voice in Michael Tecku! He continues to meet the challenge and that is the true talent of this young man...I want to hear more!
05/24/2009 8:05PM
Tecku
I really enjoy your lyrics of all your songs. looking forward to the next challenge.

Nick Mathews

05/24/2009 8:39PM
Patrick
Love your lyrics and voice. Great song.
05/24/2009 9:03PM
Double Elimination
A double elimination is not FUN or FAIR. Just because you didn't eliminate someone one week, you are going to put these great musicians in a position like this? If I were them, I'd tell the station goodbye -- everyone of them, until you get your act together and PLAY FAIR!
05/24/2009 9:33PM
Mark
Great take on a very difficult title to work with. Love the feelings your songs evoke.
05/24/2009 9:43PM
"All's fair in love and war" . . . and MMM's songwriters contest.
As per "Double Elimination" position and thoughts as to what all these great songwriters should do, I believe they should all just keep "answering the call," responding as best as they can to each week's challenge. Survive or be asked to leave next week or the week after or . . . each contestant is benefiting in a variety of ways by participating in this first-of-its-kind radio contest. Kudos to Triple M's judges for issuing the upcoming challenge of collaborating with another songwriter. It shows that the judges, and a few of us observers at least, are aware that to make it as a "pro" or "national" level songwriter/performer today one must be able to work collaboratively. Thanks judges!

Nick
Queen Neptune, I mean Welcome Intruder was a good tune. Maybe you can find a way to sneak "Put your arms around me" into the competition. Keep rock'n Nick!!
05/25/2009 12:05AM
Scott
By far the best songwriter in the contest. His songs tell a story and draw you in. Keep it up!
05/25/2009 6:23AM
Mark Harrod
Saigon, you are unbelievable!
05/25/2009 9:53AM
T
Just watched Tyler's video: Any young cool rythym section reading this needs to contact this dude and form a power trio.He has a great voice which combines hip hop with Chili Peppers and then Stevie/Jimi but not in an obvious way.
05/25/2009 10:36AM
Judges's Pickle
The judges have to decide between commercial and quirky considerations. Why are some of their favorite songs/bands their favorite? Quirks, commersh or that difficult to attain combo. Can you say Lennon/McCartney?
05/25/2009 10:47AM
Vote off
Just viewed the challenge 5 video.Wondering if they shouldn't announce the single elim from #4 until the week they announce #5's ouster. They can then see how they all contributed to the twosome and not vote off someone from #4 who kicked ass in the duo? Not EVEN confusing!
05/25/2009 2:30PM
Mike Droho
This song was lyrically and instrumentally genius.

aNYBODY kNOW?
Who's paired up for the duets this week?
05/26/2009 10:17AM
I think it's:
Mark & WhitneyPatrick & MichaelGarrett & MikeNick & Scott
05/26/2009 10:18AM
Wow
I'm looking really forward to hearing Mark and Whitney, and Patrick and Michael, those aere great pairings. The other two are going to be interesting to say the least.
05/26/2009 10:33AM
Hypothetical
Let's say that, assuming the groupings above are correct, that the judges decide to eliminate Nick based on this week's performance. What happens to Scott? Obviously they can't do a "double elimination" on just him next week, so is he safe?
05/26/2009 10:43AM
Where do I vote???
Want to vote for the soulful and most talented Patrick but can't find the link... help... jane
05/26/2009 12:07PM
Song Titles
Is it me, or are some of those song titles WAY easier than others? The currency one, the missed exit, the intruder etc, those all could go so many ways. Each can be interpreted in the songwriters style. I would say that the three hardest ones would have been the ones that locked you in were Tyler's Halloween in Athens topic, Scott's
Straight up Crooked, and especially Patrick's Smokes, Cokes, Coffee and Cakes! How can you write a song with that title...and yet BY FAR Scott and Patrick's songs were the best this week. I cannot get either of them out of my head. And every time I catch myself singing either one of those songs, I think...Who sings that song? Oh yeah it's from that online contest. I hope that the judges take into consideration, that Scott and Patrick were the winners, but also that they won with the hardest song titles to work with. In that same vein, I hope that the judges take into consideration how it might be more difficult to work with one of these songwriters, than it might be to work with another. I would hate for one of the very talented songwriters to loose, just because the picked one of the less talented songwriters to work with randomly.
05/26/2009 1:09PM
re: over-rated
I don't feel any of them are overrated. I think they're a very talented group of artists and they all deserve praise. I think Mark, specifically, has been impressive and I am thoroughly enjoying his songs. We'll see what happens this week, but so far I haven't been shocked or disappointed by the results and hope Mark sticks around.
05/26/2009 3:09PM
Go Patrick!
Lovin' your songs! Love em'.
05/26/2009 3:23PM
Re: hypothetical
why should Nick get booted, that was the best song in round 4
05/26/2009 5:26PM
Sexaaaay
Droho your voice is amazingly sexy. Mmmmm mmmmm good.
05/26/2009 5:28PM
Mark Harrod
An arrangement but the vocals were not unforgettable. The melody was in a part of his range that did not let humans hear him deliver a good performance and the note choice was a little bland for a main course. The vocal performance in general had some technical flaws, namely the shaky voice parts seemed to be executed by a pinching of the throat and shaking ones hand back and forth instead of being properly supported by musical skills. The held notes also do not sound musicy which caused some pitch issues. However, Mark shows he has the ability to construct solid songs with a snappy beat. I heard someone use the word bridge to describe a part of a song they liked and I am working that term in here and now.
05/26/2009 5:29PM
Patrick
Great line for the most difficult song this week. I appreciate that he gave me another opportunity to use the word bridge by adding one and the sing along nature of the chorus is necessary and good. I think the song suffered dynamically though, but not for too long. The constant singing really took away from energy of the chorus but all that needs to happen is to make the singing part smaller and add more strumming noise from the guitar thingy. I think the vocals could have come in the chorus as well, thats what she said.
05/26/2009 5:29PM
Mike Droho
This song never delivered so much promise to start off with. Mike seems to be very self conscious but he marks this one. The palm nutting was great during the verse because it allowed a great songy part of the song to really shine through but he never provided the singy part to go with the songy part. I was waiting the whole songy part for a section that was loud and singy like they songy from the intro. The songy section sounded more like a weak singy part because the songy part didnt really come through with the right singy energy. This is partly because the singing was sung too singy and didnt really frame the songy part well. All he needs to make this a dynamite song is add a big singy part to it.

RE: "This doesn't make sense . . ."
Even if you just arrived in Madison, you must have noticed this town/city is fundamentally different from most American urban scenes. Folks here are smarter, hipper, and, yes, more trusting. This, perhaps, stems in part from the political and cultural history of Madison going back to the pre-Vietnam era. If MMM opted to be overtly trusting in terms of this communication strand, it is likely because the station knows that we, who contribute to this communication stream, will most likely, in general, not dam it up or pollute it. Chill, baby. Only a few around town have opted to be offensive by deleting comment for selfish reasons.
Some things you forgot to mention: Madison is apparently full of "songwriters" who are overly enamored of Dave Matthews, aka the "soft white underbelly of rock." It's hilarious watching the citizens of this "world class city" pretend they are actually cosmopolitan and cutting-edge. That's right, don't disturb us on our little isthmus and let the real world intrude!

re: RE: "This doesn't make sense . . ."
hey meanie, c'mon madison's heart is in the right place! i mean i love black people (even though i don't know any). PS what's wrong with dave matthew's
05/26/2009 9:27PM
re: RE: "This doesn't make sense . . ."
I THINK WHAT THIS PERSON WAS SAYING IS EVERY SINGLE SINGER SAID DAVE MATTHEWS IS THEIR INFLUENCE -- SO WHERES THE SO-CALLED DIVERSITY OF THIS TOWN
05/27/2009 7:18AM
To the Dave Matthews runs Madison posters...
I only see 3 people with Dave Matthews as an influence, Tecku, Harrod, & Droho. And only Droho really stands a chance in this competition.
05/27/2009 8:17AM
Good thing we're voting for individuals and NOT their "influences."
The bio. info about "influences," as well as some other items the songwriters initially responded to was simply made available to us to give us a sort of first impression of who they are, stuff serious artist of every genre typically are asked in interviews, etc. Why try to nail them to a cross for their off the cuff answers - especially if they don't jive with musical influences one may not think highly of. In the long run, people don't decide to vote for a candidate or pay a cover to hear a band or solo artist because of who are his or her influences. As per who does or does not stand a chance in this competition, it might be well to remember that most of the musicians/songwriters who ultimately made it, if you use Rolling Stone or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as standards, were generally counted out by fans and critics alike at some point in their early careers. Oh, yes, then there was that young man from Illinois who to was told, even months after winning the Iowa primary, that he didn't stand a chance to be elected our 44th President. Art and history are replete with such examples.
05/27/2009 9:26AM
re: Good thing we're voting for individuals and NOT their "influences."
love it! you take a rinky-dink contest in nowheresville so seriously that you throw in "serious artists," the rock and roll hall of fame and even Obama's election! and you even use the word "replete" to top it all off!!! Dave Matthews has completelybrainwashed you with his middle of the road, "sensitive" wack-folk music!

re: Saigon's army
i think if you had to take a pole right now he would win it
05/27/2009 9:53AM

The Dark Brown Eye of Mark Saigon
It is pointed right at you Mr Meanie Pants Bad Speller "Siagon" Hater. And it is watching you and waiting. Mark's heart and musical talent are so large you could never even give them a reach around.

05/28/2009 6:36PM
Saigon's still going to take it
lots of people have his back

Whitney and Scott
I feel like Dylan's Thin Man. I'm in a room full of Geeks. Whitney and Scott are clearly the best songwriters, yet I keep screaming, and the crowd still bop and hop to this wanna-be Dave Matthews crap.

Awesome Ray Davies
I love the Kinks and I always have, so when I heard that Ray Davies was going to play the Riviera Theater in Chicago, I was there! We were lucky enough to get seats in the first row of the balcony so I didn't have to stand for the whole show. Being only 5 feet tall, [...]

Norah Jones at Overture Hall
I've always enjoyed playing Norah Jones on the radio, but I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy an entire evening of her songs.
