Vince Cannova

Vince CannovaVince grew up an hour and a half south of town.  In the 80's he spent a number of nights road tripping to Madison looking for trouble, most of the time ending up at the Coliseum.  He still has the ticket stubs to prove it!  Ask him about his camping trips to Devils Lake or how many cars he totaled in high school.  This kid was a mess.

He's always loved music and began his radio career at Southern Illinois University.  Vince figured the further he got away from his parents the better.  His parents couldn't have agreed more!

After five years in San Diego and acquiring a taste for fish tacos, Vince moved to Detroit to take his broadcasting career to the next level.  Yeah, everybody thought he was crazy. Eighteen years later he's come full circle and landed back here in Madison.

John Peel's Music Library to Become Interactive Online Museum

The BBC has kicked in funding to complete a project making John Peel's record collection available online. The legendary British DJ, record producer, and journalist had 25,000 lps, 40,000 singles, and thousands more cds archived at the time of his death in 2004.

Peel's collection will become part of The Space, a new experimental digital service organized and funded by the Arts council and the BBC. Frank Prendergast of Eye Film And Television says, "The idea is to digitally recreate John's home studio and record collection, which users will be able to interact with and contribute to, while viewing Peel's personal notes, archive performances and new filmed interviews with musicians."

Just how interactive the project will be remains to be seen. The Space will be available May - October of 2012 via smartphones and various pc platforms.

Listen: Santigold - Disparate Youth

Santigold will release her sophomore record Master of My Make-Believe May 1st. It includes collaborations with Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, and DJ Switch who's worked with Beyonce and M.I.A.

"I connect with music that makes me feel alive, or a sense of possibility. Music is powerful. If I go out and I'm watching a show and it's really good, all I want to do is go home and work on music. It's a backhanded motivation when something is really good. I want my music to be that for other people."

I'm loving this single Disparate Youth available at itunes tomorrow.

Green Day Post Video of First Day Back in the Studio

Green Day headed back into the studio Valentine's Day to begin recording their ninth studio album. The band had road tested new songs like Carpe Diem at a few impromptu shows toward the end of last year.

Some of the songs working titles include Wow, That's Loud and Make Out Party. Green Day have been demoing new material since the spring of 2011. Billie Joe says the new record will be more straight forward and less conceptual than the last two.

While the trio is plugging away in the studio a feature film version of the American Idiot musical is in development and reportedly being produced by Tom Hanks.

Check out a clip of Green Day's first day back in the studio.

Concord on Making Music for Muppets

Bret McKenzie of TV comedy duo Flight of the Concords has grabbed an Oscar nomination for his song Man or Muppet in the new disney film.

James Bobin director of The Muppets called on McKenzie to write songs for the film. The two worked together previously on the HBO series Flight of the Concords. Crafting songs for a beloved brand like The Muppets had it's limitations.

"Jim Henson said if the music's too good, it's not right, so I took that to heart and kept the songs slightly shambolic. Also Miss Piggy can't sing very high or very low, otherwise she loses the sound of Miss Piggy."

One half of "New Zealand's fourth most popular folk parody act" immersed himself in the music of Paul Williams to strike the right tone.

"There was a lot of good demos too. Jim James from My Morning Jacket wrote one for Man or Muppet, he wrote a great version but it was incredibly mellow, and Disney got scared. It was a little too beautiful and it needed to be beautiful and ridiculous at the same time."

After the Oscars February 26th look for McKenzie in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit and another film called Austenland.

Decentralized Dance Party Could Happen in Madison

Two Canadians Tom and Gary have come up with the concept of a Decentralized Dance Party. They've organized events across Canada and are now bringing the party to the U.S. The only requirement for a stop in Madison April 9th is to raise $1000 via the DDP Kickstarter page.

The Decentralized Dance Party uses a portable fm transmitter and hundreds of boom boxes to get the party started. The money raised thru Kickstarter pays for boomboxes, batteries, gas and more. The deadline to raise funds for Madison is February 10th.

Sound like fun? Spread the word.

Stephen Colbert Unleashes 'Mitt The Ripper' Attack Ad

Stephen Colbert continued his quest to become the President of the United States of South Carolina and released a new Mitt Romney attack ad today. The ad titled Attack In B Minor For Strings portrays Romney as "Mitt the Ripper".

Jon Stewart, head of The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super Pac explained in a press release, "The new spot begins airing today in a major ad buy that will blanket South Carolina from Charleston all the way to North Charleston."

The illogical Supreme Court decision on Citizens United stating the First Amendment prohibits government from placing limits on independent spending for political purposes by corporations and unions has never been more clearly exposed.

Here's hoping millions are spent on this silliness and that it actually effects the outcome of the South Carolina primary. I mean, there is a donation page and all. It would be the best thing to happen to this country since January 21, 2010.

How Crowd Funding Can Save Yasuni National Park
In 2007 Ecuador launched an initiative to protect the world's climate and the rainforest of Yasuni National Park by leaving 846 million barrels of oil valued at $7.2 billion in the ground. A new multi-donor trust fund managed by the UN Development Program was designed to offset lost oil revenue. It focuses on reducing carbon dioxide emissions by permanently foregoing extraction of fossil fuels from the park, developing alternative energy, protecting indigenous groups, and reducing poverty and inequality through sustainable social development.

In exchange for keeping the crude oil in the ground the Ecuadorian government has asked for compensation of $360 million a year for 10 years, half the revenue it would receive by drilling in the rainforest. The government then set a deadline of December 30, 2011. If both public and private donors gave $100 million by that date, the project would go forward. If not, the deal was off.

Business people, national governments, and celebrities from Al Gore to Leonardo DiCaprio have since donated $116 million. That's enough to keep 722 square miles of the park's most valuable rainforest free from oil exploitation, for now. The current goal is to raise the full $3.6 billion by 2024. Italy has written off more than $50 million of Ecuador's debt. Germany has donated over $40 million. But Ecuador President Correa's proposal really depends on crowd funding.

Anyone can donate to the Yasuni-ITT trust fund. Even small donations help validate the project's hypothesis that there is an international community that values natural resources enough to pay for their survival. Yasuni contains what is thought to be the greatest variety of tree and insect species anywhere on the planet. In just 2.5 acres there are as many tree species as in all of the United States and Canada combined.
