WATCH: Billy Corgan Talks Nirvana, David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, and Latest Release, 'Ogilala'

October 16, 2017

William Patrick Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins just dropped his solo album Ogilala on October 13. In addition to the album’s release, he also premiered his short silent film, Pillbox. (Apparently both the album and film are companion pieces that, when experienced simultaneously, create a combination similar to that of The Wizard of Oz and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

In the midst of all these projects, WPC made some time to talk to Billboard and answer a few questions from Reddit users. In the interview (above), the Smashing Pumpkins frontman talks about an abandoned Pumpkins project and the first time he heard Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” among other things. Trust us—you want to hear the latter story, especially.

And, if you thought the Ogilala song “Zowie” sounded awfully similar to “Bowie,” you’re not crazy. Find out what made WPC name the Ogilala opener after the late David Bowie.

WPC’s tour kicked off in Brooklyn and runs through mid-November.
