5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Pink Floyd

March 10, 2016
Our Friday feature this week is Pink Floyd, as we celebrate the 70th birthday this week of guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour.

Here are five things you may not have known about this psychedelic band.

1. Not to be confused with Megadeath, the band was known as the Meggadeaths for awhile. Other early names included Sigma 6 and the Screaming Abdabs.

2. Some of the schoolchildren who sang "we don't need no education" on "Another Brick in the Wall" sued for royalties--but waited until 2004, more than 20 years later. The suit proved unsuccessful.

3.David Gilmour is the godfather of actress Naomi Watts. Her father, Peter Watts, was a Pink Floyd roadie in the 1970s.

4. A Pink Floyd photo shoot caused flights to be shut down at Heathrow Airport. During an "Animals" shoot, a giant inflatable pig got loose, soaring into the air and getting into the landing paths of incoming planes. Eventually, it came to earth miles away in a farm field. They found this out when the photographer got a phone call from a farmer who asked, "Are you looking for a pig? It's scaring my cows to death."

5.  Pink Floyd opened their "Dark Side of the Moon" tour in Madison, Wisconsin at the Dane County Coliseum. In advance, tickets for the "Pink Floyd Sound and Light Show" were $4.00.  More about that show here. They also played Madison's Camp Randall Stadium on May 20, 1988, and July 3, 1994.

This is one of the songs they played at that Madison show in 1973. This footage is from a show a couple months later.
