Someone asked me if I feel sorry for Lovie Smith. For those of you not familiar with the world of professional football, Smith was the head coach for the Chicago Bears the last nine years. He was fired by management this past Monday.
I’ve been a Bear fan my whole life, but I can’t manage any tears for Smith. Was it his fault the team didn’t make the playoffs? I’m not sure, but who cares. The guy made more than 20 MILLION dollars during his tenure in Chicago.
It reminds me of people who felt sorry for Conan O’Brien when he was shown the door at NBC. The Peacock Network dished out 32 MILLION when they replaced O’Brien with Jay Leno.
I have nothing against Smith or O’Brien. Good for them for getting paid all that money. I’m not even saying they didn’t deserve it. My motto has always been if you can get someone to pay you a huge paycheck, you deserve it.
However, I can’t feel bad for someone who is financially secure for life. Besides O’Brien found another job quickly and Smith will too.
I feel sorry for the average guy who works hard at his job for years, makes a modest salary, gets fired because of budget cuts and still has to figure out how to take care of his family.
