Who's excited about the new Coldplay song?

Coldplay is supposedly working on a new album to follow their 2011 release, Milo Xyloto. But we don't have to wait until that album comes out, whenever that will be, to hear a new song.

This week the band debuted the song "Midnight" on their website, and will most likely be playing it live when they to go South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

I like the dreamy, ethereal nature of the song, but the vocals seem over-processed to me. What do you think?

Too much like a Bon Iver tune
I get the feeling this song doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it Bon Iver tune with the electronic-filtered vocals or is it a dance tune with a beat that doesn't really materialize until mid-way through the song and then never truly busts out. It is haunting and pretty, but not organic or as genuine as other Coldplay rock tunes, even as highly produced some of them are. Here, we barely hear Chris Martin's voice, and we hard pressed to hear any guitar, drums or piano -- all instruments the band members play. What are they playing in this song? It is all electronic. This is song is such a departure that it is hard not to wonder if it is written for a movie soundtrack rather than a Coldplay album.

Midnight ... in context
I've listened to this song quite a few times now. It ended up being track 5 on Coldplay's Ghost Stories release later in 2014 (as I'm sure most of us already know). In the context of the whole record, the track sits beautifully in the song order. Heard in context of the record as a whole (which I think not a lot of people do anymore), I think one get's a different perspective. It is aptly named if you're listening to it alone walking on the bike path under a moonlit sky. Ethereal and even a little creepy in it's vocal production, the song gives off a feeling of mystery, as if you're walking in a dream. I personally think it's one of the strongest Coldplay tracks, precisely because it is so different. - Bob M.
