: Van Halen Tour

I admit it.  I want to see Van Halen on tour this year.    I never had a chance to see Diamond Dave, Eddie, Alex and Michael when I was in high school.  I know Michael and his Jack Daniels bass guitar are no longer in the mix, but this will do.

I've always been fascinated by Van Halen.  I've always thought of David Lee Roth as an American version of Mick Jagger.   Both wear tight pants and boas, but some how Mick seems a bit classier when doing it.  It's similar to an English accent making a stupid sentence sound sophisticated.

Van Halen always reminded me of the crazy party guys in high school, but not the ones who would beat the crap out of you if you came to their party uninvited.  Led Zeppelin seemed like a group of guys who would beat you up if you showed up without an invite.  Same with AC/DC.  However, Van Halen always felt like the guys with a  "the more the merrier" mantra.  This, of course, is based on nothing.  The last time I checked, I wasn't invited to any parties being thrown by Zeppelin, AC/DC or Van Halen.

All of the members of Van Halen are older and I'm sure the audience will be older too.  I wonder if Dave can still do those high leg kicks?  No matter,  most of the audience will be tired by 10pm.

: Bruce Springsteen's Album Release & Tour

Bruce PhotoSometimes great art comes out of tragedy. With the death of Clarence Clemons last year, it will be interesting to see how that will impact the new album from Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Bruce has already announced dates for a European tour, and says details on the U.S. tour will be coming soon. Last year, a statement on brucespringsteen.net said "we want you to know that the music is almost done (but still untitled), we have almost settled on the release date (but not quite yet), and that we are all incredibly excited about everything that we're planning for 2012."  If I had my way, the new album will be more rock than ballads...and the tour would include a stop in Madison. Fingers crossed.

: Beach Boys Tour

Beach BoysWord is that the Beach Boys will reunite and tour in 2012.  The reunion is said to include Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston.  In addition to a tour that is rumored to start with a date at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in April, the band has already been in the studio working on new songs for a reunion album, plus you can expect a whole slew of reissues and repackaging of older Beach Boys material.  I already saw a big box set of the Smile sessions being sold at Best Buy over the weekend ($100+), but didn’t lay down the credit card as it looked exactly like the bootleg set my wife gave me for Christmas a few years back- except for some pretty amazing packaging.  Rolling Stone magazine gives the whole thing about an 80% chance of actually happening- noting that the guys really hate each other, but a quote from Brian on Pitchfork.com makes me optimistic…"This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again."

: The Shins' Port of Morrow

The Shins I can’t wait to hear the new Shins record.  It’s scheduled to be released at the end of March.  The new material has been written and almost entirely performed by James Mercer.  The Shins now include Yuuki Matthews on bass, Jessica Dobson on guitar, Richard Swift on keys and Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer on guitar.  A tour in support of the upcoming release is in the works.

It will be interesting to see these guys on the road.  Mercer has put together a completely new line up.

: Regina Spektor's What We Saw from the Cheap Seats

Regina Photo
I am
totally stoked for a new album from the amazing Regina Spektor. This Russian émigré’s music is quirky and wonderful and I’m sure the new album will be more of the same. It’s been 3 years since the last album and it will be interesting to see what she brings to “ What I Saw From the Cheap Seats”. It’s scheduled for release on May 12.

: Lyle Lovett's Release Me

I’m psyched about the upcoming Lyle Lovett release. Because with his album comes spring…and the dawn of a new day.

: Andrew Bird's
Break It Yourself

Andrew BirdI'm looking forward to the March 6th release of Andrew Bird's new album, Break It Yourself. Andrew's 2005 album Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs has been a mainstay in my Top 10 all-time albums, the kind of record where you put on track 1...and you can't stop listening. I'm also looking forward to seeing Andrew Bird on tour this spring. I've only seen him live once - it was back in '06 at the Orpheum's Stage Door, and I sat in awe of him as he performed solo, looping his little heart out. Andrew will be headlining at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee on March 24th, and you can bet I'll be in the audience. See you there?

The tracklist (as well as a video preview) for Break It Yourself was just released -- explore it here.

We still miss you Stevie Ray Vaughan
It's hard to believe it's been 24 years since we lost Stevie Ray Vaughan in that helicopter crash after a show at Alpine Valley. I've talked to lots of people who were at that concert, which also featured Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and...

World's Worst iPod: Donny Osmond "Soldier of Love"
It's hard to believe that Donny Osmond scored his second biggest solo hit in 1989, but it's true! "Soldier of Love" went all the way to #2 on the charts. When the song was released, the record company was afraid no one would buy a new Donny...

World's Worst iPod: Exile "Kiss You All Over"
Kitty thought this song was an example of country disco and was not a fan...but just about everybody else was. "Kiss You All Over" was #1 for four weeks in 1978, and was probably one of the year's best songs. Exile rocks out with the song here...

The next Jonny Lang? Quinn Sullivan is the real deal
I was up in Wausau for the Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, and had a great time watching all the great live music. The big surprise of the day was the guy who played at 3pm. He's just 15 years old and is a good friend of Buddy Guy, and even got to play...

World's Worst iPod: Young MC "Bust a Move"
Kitty apppeared to be all alone on her dislike of this song, which made it to #7 on the charts in 1989. Rolling Stone described the song this way: "a G-rated funk-bomb integral to hip-hop's eventual mainstream acceptance." The G-rating probably...
