So I traveled West to Portland take part in the Mt. Hood Scramble over the weekend. I was warned by Lindsay that this was no ordinary fun run. I expected it to be a little rugged, but rugged doesn't do this race justice. Before we even started the race the path to get our race numbers was filled with giant rocks. Lindsay said, "Oh this is exactly what the course will be like today." Actually she was way off. It was worse. Yet it was fantastic.
There were tons of rocks, there were tons of fallen trees, there were tons of trees still standing, there were tons of bushes, there was a cold, cold river to cross several times and did I mention the mud? How could this be fun? I think that the route is so bad it's good. We had about 12 people in our group running and to top it off we all wore tutus. It seemed like an crazy idea cooked up by Lindsay and her girlfriends, but it was a great one. All along the race people cheered on Team Tutu with extra passion because we looked so goofy. I mean graceful.
So here's a breakdown of Team Tutu:
Andrea: Lindsay's roommate who actually runs and does kick boxing. She was ready to kick some butt.
Tony: Andrea's boyfriend and premiere kickball player in Portland. He likes to kick balls.
Geoff: Firefighter by day and tutu wearing racer on weekends.
Annalisa: Geoff's fiance and master of convincing a firefighter to wear a tutu.
Rachel: Human Resources guru who brought her dog Riley to the race. Yes, he wore a tutu as well.
Jeff: Rachel's boyfriend who managed to avoid wearing a tutu. I think that made him run faster.
Kim: Lindsay's other roommate who thought this would be a fun way to celebrate her birthday.
This was a six mile run, but it was more like a six mile "try not to fall and break something". Have you ever been stuck in an elevator or some other situation where you're with a group of people and suddenly you bond over a common experience? That's exactly what happened with the Mt. Hood Scramble. I've been on tons of fun runs, but in this case the participants were more connected then ever. There were runners from 20 different states. I'm not sure if I was the only one from Wisconsin, but I was proud to wear a Badger red tutu and represent Bucky.
Lindsay and I got split up from most of the group, but we managed to stick together. As we climbed up the final hill to the finish line, there were tons of people cheering us on. It almost felt like the final climb would never end. However, we both did a jump as we crossed the finish.
After it was all done we were tired, sore, bruised and cold. So will I do this again next year? In a heartbeat.
