Toy Hall of Fame: the time is now for the Rubber Duck

The National Toy Hall of Fame has released its nominees for induction in 2013. Twelve are nominated, but only two will win a spot in this coveted Hall, to stand side by side with other Hall of Fame toys like the Stick, the Ball, and the Blanket.

This year's nominees are: bubbles, chess, the board game Clue, Fisher-Price Little People, little green Army men, the Magic 8 Ball, My Little Pony, Nerf toys, the Pac-Man video game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the scooter and the rubber duck.

While all the toys have their attributes, I must cast my vote for the rubber duck. I bet you didn't know this simple bathtub toy has such a storied history.

In 1992, during a storm in the Pacific, 29,000 plastic ducks floated off a ship, and some are still turning up to this day. While some floated to Indonesia and Australia, others ended up in the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska, where they got wedged in Arctic Ice.  What a harrowing adventure for those tiny birds!  Surely this must be taken into consideration by the historians who make their pick.

On the other end of the spectrum is the whimsical nature of the rubber duck. How awesome was it when an artist created a huge rubber duck and floated it around in the harbors of major cities. (See photo above. Image source wikimedia commons).

But I think the most earnest plea (pun intended) comes from Ernie, or Ernie and Bert fame.

Yes, rubber duckie, we're awfully fond of you!

I think my heart may have stopped beating
Dear Superstars, During last night's elimination I think my heart may have stopped beating and that would've been it's own "drive-by heartache." This competition is tough but I'm very proud for making it through the first challenge. My level of...

Blood Moon: reason to stay up late, or end of the world?
There's a preacher in Texas who's a little freaked out about tonight's lunar eclipse, and the three that follow every six months over the next two years. He thinks it's a signal of the end of the world!, and has even written a book...
