"How in the heck can you be Irish and not like potatoes?"
That was a question I was asked over and over as a kid..and even into adulthood. The only kind of potatoes I would eat were potato chips, tater tots, and french fries.
Mashed potatoes were abhorrent to me. When I took school lunch, I was very grossed out by the idea of chicken a la king...so much so that I said "hold the a la king" and would just have a big scoop of chicken and gravy.
At some point I added hash browns to my acceptable menu..but only if they were really crispy and served with ketchup (and thus were more fry-like).
I was in my mid-30's before I even tried potato salad. And guess what? I liked it! And I now eat mashed potatoes---and really love them if they're extra buttery or made with those baby red-skinned potatoes.
But if I were forced to eat school lunch I'd probably still say "hold the a la king."
