People have been wondering why Billie Joe jumped off the bridge since this song came out and made it to number 1 in 1967. Singer Bobby Gentry says people always asked what was thrown over the bridge and why did Billie Joe jump. She never would give a straight answer. The question was eventually answered in a movie and a book.
In 1968, Jeannie C. Riley topped both the pop and country charts with "Harper Valley PTA". She was the first female singer to accomplish that feat and it wasn't repeated until Dolly Parton did it in 1981 with the song "9 to 5". The song was written by Tom T. Hall and eventually lead to the creation of a movie and a television show. Barbara Eden starred in both as the sassy mom who reminds the school board to be careful when criticising someone else's life choices.
This week we're doing story songs on the World's Worst iPod. We start with the story of Billy who really wanted to be a hero. He was a hero, but didn't live to see it and his girlfriend was pretty angry. The song was originally done by Paper Lace in 1974 and was a hit in the UK. A few months later, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods recorded it and it went to number 1 in the U.S.
In 1974 Jim Stafford managed to crawl and slither his way all the way to number 3 with this song and it sold more than 2 million copies. If you want to see him perform the song live, check out the Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson, Missouri.
The Trashmen set out to record a bad song, but just the opposite happened. Everyone loved it and it made it all the way to number 4. Perhaps Peter from Family Guy loves it the most.
Despite the fact that Madison's very own radio legend, Jonathan Little help make this song a hit, no one really wanted to hear the Captain & Tennille sing about Muskrat Love...except Jonathan Suttin. Here's some background on Jonathan Little making the song a hit according to Wikipedia:
A&M Records decided to issue "Muskrat Love" as a single after WISM had been airing the album cut reported phenomenal listener response to the song in September 1976. Captain & Tennille's "Muskrat Love" reached a #4 Hot 100 peak that December.
Who thought a song about a pet rat could be so popular? It was number 1 on the charts for one week in 1972. The song was written for the filmBen which was actually a horror film. Ben is the sequel to the film Willard. Not sure if it's worth getting into the whole story, but Ben is the leader of a pack of rats terrorizes people and even causes some deaths. A little boy named Danny befriends Ben and eventually takes in the varmint after all his little rat friends are In the end, the police get rid of all the rats except Ben. Here's Michael Jackson singing the song at the Oscars. Yes, this song was nominated for an Oscar.
In 1975 Eric Carmen may have been complaining about being all by himself, but he really wasn't alone. All By Myself made it to number 2 on the charts. The song is actually based on the second movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Even though it has classical roots, it's still pretty bad.
Songwriter Burt Bacharach penned this song in the late 60's and the 5th Dimension took it all the way to number 2 in 1970. The song was even featured in the 1970's show It Takes a Thief starring Robert Wagner. Kitty and Brian gave it a thumbs down, but Jonathan liked it. The final vote of the morning came into question, but it played.
This song made it to the top of the charts in November of 1985. It was written by Stephen Bishop for the movie White Nights starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Helen Mirren and Isabella Rossellini. The song was nominated for an Oscar, but lost out to Lionel Richie's "Say You Say Me", which was also featured in the same movie. Jnoathan really wanted to hear the song, but just about EVERYONE else said NO!!!
Harry Nilsson didn't write this song. In fact, when he first heard it he thought it was a Beatles tune. When he found out it was written by Badfinger, he decided to record it. Good decision considering the song was number 1 for four weeks in 1972. It was also number one in England, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.
Kitty saw John Waite in Steven's Point back in 1984 and wanted to relive the experience this morning. This song made it to number 1 in 1984 and it was number 1 in a lot of listeners' hearts too. Jonathan didn't feel like hearing the song this morning, but he was in the minority.
