Admittedly, my anticipation level for Sunday's Super Bowl has been pretty low...it's hard to buy into the hype when the Packers aren't involved. But a story today caught my eye---the mayor of Phoenix, an Arizona Cardinals fan, is getting a little flack for blowing his nose into a Pittsburgh Steelers' Terrible Towel. While I agree that's a snotty thing to do...that's not exactly what caught my interest.
It's the name Terrible Towel.
When I was in high school in Stevens Point, I was a big supporter of all the Panther sports teams. I went to all the home football and basketball games..and was one of those nerdy kids who took the fan bus to away games regularly too.
I can't remember if it was during my junior or senior year when Terrible Towels were all the rage. They were red pieces of fabric emblazoned with the Panther logo. I'm not sure if the creator was selling them or handing them out free..but I do remember a lot of kids waving them in the air at basketball games.
That is until it was discovered where they were coming from. Seems one of my classmates worked at a fancy schmancy restaurant in Stevens Point..called The Restaurant, inside the Sentry Insurance headquarters. He was stealing red cloth napkins and then adding the SPASH logo. Apparently The Restuarant didn't have an unending supply...because eventually it was noticed that quite a few of them were missing. And it didn't take Starsky and Hutch to put two and two together.
Suddenly..the Terrible Towels were gone. And our season went down the drain.
Actually I don't recall how the team did...but I needed an end to the story. And I won't mention the name of the individual involved..to protect his identity as he was a juvenile. Or maybe I just don't remember. That's back when Jimmy Carter was president for crying out loud!
Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons.
1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels.
2) I used to...

This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, it is another gorgeous Monday, fit for another great show at the Crystal Corner tonight.
Through locking ourselves in the barn on Irish Lane, tossing some ideas around, as well as a few choice beverages to...
