When the holidays roll around, there's usually not a lot of actual news happening. That's when local assignment editors bring out some old classics that are guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye.
Yeah, this year we have a bad economy and a new president coming to save the day, but you can just bet we're going to get a lot of old stand-by stories anyway. I used to be a news director of an old fashioned newsy AM radio station, so I'm guilty of some of them myself. Like Christmas tree safety. Salvation Army Bell ringers. Do sales of champagne really increase on New Year's Eve?
Once when I was working in Stevens Point I complained to my news director that I hated the city's new downtown Christmas decorations..so he sent me out to do a "man-on-the-street" piece about how shoppers felt about them. I remember one guy said "they're bright and shiny and I like them." He may or may not have been drinking too much egg nog.
