Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Go Green on Valentine's Day and Save the Earth

February 14, both a dreaded and highly anticipated holiday, has a very long history dating back hundreds of years.  However, thanks (or not thanks) to marketers, the celebration of this long-standing tradition has been amplified ten-fold.

These fast consumption related facts about V-Day will absolutely blow your mind:
  • Around a billion valentines are sent each year globally, making the day the 2nd largest card-sending holiday of the year behind X-Mas
  • 25% of all seasonal cards sent annually are valentines
  • Over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold each year
  • V-Day is the top holiday for fresh flower purchases, with red roses being most popular
  • 10% of engagements happen on V-Day
Apparent from these statistics is that Valentine's Day delivers big business, and as such has the potential to have a substantial impact on the environment.  I mean, one billion cards, laid end to end, would stretch around the world 5 times!  Poor trees!

Green Valentine's Day Gift Ideas:

Show some extra love for thee environment by carefully considering what you buy...
  • Cards made from recycled or tree-free paper (indicated on the card)
  • Consider sending an e-card instead (such a quality service)
  • Purchase fair trade and/or organic chocolate
  • Buy organic and/or locally grown flowers
  • Make a donation to an environmental organization on behalf of your loved one
  • If you wish to give jewelry, consider pre-owned or purchasing from jewelers who are certified to be sourcing precious metals and gemstones in an ecologically and socially responsible manner
  • Buy your special someone a gift certificate for hollistic therapies - Massage, naturopath, health spa
  • Arrange dinner at a local restaurant specializing in organic or locally grown food
  • Perhaps make dinner yourself using locally grown ingrediients, accompanied by a nice organic wine.  Set the mood with earth-friendly candles...the effort you put in will be sure to impress!
  • Book a retreat in a wildlife reserve, park, or natural area.  Your business will help support the running of such establishments
  • Give natural perfumes and fragrances.  Popular mainstream fragrances are chemical cocktails.  By buying natural fragrances, you'll be showing you not only care about the person's health, but also the environment.

Just a few ideas to get you thinking!  But as someone who lacks a romantic bone in her body, I'm sure our readers would have plenty of ideas that are stylistically different - add them below! Help someone brighten their holiday!

World's Worst iPod: Harper Valley PTA
In 1968, Jeannie C. Riley topped both the pop and country charts with "Harper Valley PTA". She was the first female singer to accomplish that feat and it wasn't repeated until Dolly Parton did it in 1981 with the song "9 to 5". The song was...

Who wants to try watermelon Oreos?

Nuff said.
Here To Help
One small detail I like about Bonnaroo ... the security people's shirts say "Safety" and "Here to help". They seem well-trained and they do the things security folk do ... but I like the emphasis on safety and that they're doing these things...
