I bet you never thought you'd hear me say an old dead newspaper guy needs to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But that's exactly what I'm advocating.
Okay--he started out as a newspaper guy and then started hosting a long-running variety show on CBS. You know the guy who introduced the Beatles to America? Yeah, that guy. Ed Sullivan.
I was really surprised when I browsed through the list of Hall of Fame members and did not see Ed's name. There is a category for non-performers, so it's not like we have to make up a new category for him. Some of the non-performers on the list include Alan Freed (the disc jockey who made up the term rock and roll), Sam Phillips (Sun Studios founder), and Leo Fender (the electric guitar/amp guy). Dick Clark makes the list and so does crazy-as-a-loon producer Phil Spector..not that the distinction does him any good in prison!
The Ed Sullivan Show ran on CBS from 1948 to 1971, and during that time he introduced America to a lot of great musical acts. Of course, there was that big performance in 1964 of the Beatles..but he also brought many other British Invasion acts to the attention of the American public, including the Rolling Stones, the Animals, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Petula Clark.
Even before the British invasion, Ed Sullivan brought rock and roll into America's living rooms...with appearances by Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly. And for the most part, their performances were live, and not lip-synched as was the case on most shows during that era.
Ed Sullivan may not have known much about rock music, but he knew what the kids wanted to see. And if he hadn't brought it to them, we might still be listening to Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.
This is a commercial for a compilation of videos from the Ed Sullivan show..and it gives you a glimpse of what we got to watch every Sunday night.
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons.
1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels.
2) I used to...
Hello to all from Nfusion. Another round of challenges has moved beyond us all. Congrats to those of us lucky enough to have survived to this point. Sad to see the others eliminated as they were all very creative and talented. Good Bye to our new friends...
This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

Next up is the Marquette...
John Fogerty is making the talk show rounds this week, stopping in to see David Letterman Tuesday and Wednesday, and the ladies of "The View" on Thursday.

It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, it is another gorgeous Monday, fit for another great show at the Crystal Corner tonight.
Through locking ourselves in the barn on Irish Lane, tossing some ideas around, as well as a few choice beverages to...
Hey everybody, we were thrown for a loop by the twist this week, but were able to make one of our "oldie but a goldie" songs fit the mold.
We have a few songs that we have played consistently over the years, and we are very happy that we will be...
