Tomorrow is the annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in Madison, when hundreds of seemingly sane people jump into icy freezing cold water to raise money for Special Olympics.
Special Olympics is a wonderful cause..but I'm puzzled as to how this nonsensical thing started. Usually falling through the ice is a very bad thing. That's how George Bailey's brother Harry lost his hearing in a sledding accident for crying out loud!
Here's the thing. For me, even immersing myself into a heated pool is a pretty drawn out process. First I test the water a bit with by trailing my hand through the water. Then if it doesn't seem too bad, I slowly walk down the pool's steps, until the water is about waist high, audibly shiver for a bit, and then eventually plop down into the water.
I don't think that system would work very well tomorrow at Willow Island.
Apparently you can still help out Special Olympics by registering as "Too Chicken To Plunge," joining a team and collecting pledges. If the t-shirt was changed to say "Too Practical To Plunge," maybe I would do it.
