Why is this so difficult?
Penn State football should be punished for the non-actions by its former coach. The official report from Louis Freeh is out and says Joe Paterno was aware of Jerry Sandusky’s actions back in 1998 and thought it best to cover it up because it would hurt the image of the football program.
Ohio State University is in trouble because athletes got free tattoos. The University of Wisconsin was in trouble because some athletes got free shoes. Southern Methodist University lost its football program for several years because donors were giving athletes money and even cars.
Penn State was allowing one of its coaches to rape children.
This is not that difficult.
This does not mean Penn State University and all its faculty and students are evil. This does not mean anyone who ever graduated from PSU is evil. This does not mean PSU can’t redeem itself. It has already taking baby steps by hiring former FBI director Louis Freeh to conduct this investigation.
This does mean the football program should be punished. If a college sports program is punished for giving a student money to buy a car, why shouldn’t another school be punished for letting a coach rape children?
This is not that difficult.
If Joe Paterno helped 1 million people get an education and become productive citizens, it is all lost if he knew even one child was being raped and didn’t do everything possible to help.
Penn State does not have to go away and it can rise from this horrible situation, but its supporters must erase Joe Paterno from the landscape.
The first step is taking down the statue of Paterno outside the football stadium.
