I missed the Major League Baseball All-Star game this year because I was at the opening night of the musical Billy Elliott at Overture Center. I think I made the right choice considering the American League didn’t show up for the mid-summer classic.
Therefore, I missed the singing of the National Anthem by country star Luke Bryan. Apparently, he did a great job of singing it but there were some complaints that Bryan looked down at his hand and even his watch during the performance.
Bryan has now admitted he wrote the lyrics to the anthem on his hand. He also looked at his watch because he wanted to time out the song perfectly for when the stealth bomber flew over the stadium.
Some are criticizing Bryan. I give him a pass on checking of the watch. Getting the timing with the bomber is important and it appears he started singing the song late. I can understand if they told him he has 55 seconds and he wanted to hit it on the nose.
However, the memorization of the words is another story. I’m really bad at memorizing things. I remember many years ago when I worked at a station in Houston and had to welcome people to a lunchtime performance of classical music put on by some members of the Houston Symphony. I couldn’t remember the exact name of the event and had to pull out a crumbled piece of paper in my pocket, slowly open it and look for the name of the event. Of course, if I was in that position now, I would gloss over the specific name and just give people a more general welcome.
You can’t gloss over the National Anthem, but I think Bryan should have probably practiced that thing every single night before bed. I know it’s a quirky song.

I thought it was perilous FLIGHT and OH the ramparts for years and years.
I guess we shouldn’t be too hard on Bryan because he just wanted to get it right. If you watch his peformance (below) you'll see he did an amazing job. The song sounds beautiful and very sincere. However, singing the National Anthem and being judged by a bunch of couch potatoes who can’t sing and probably would fail a 6th grade test on our nation’s history seems to be the American Way.
