"The Emperor of Wyoming" is the name of a Neil Young song.
Emperors of Wyoming is Butch Vig's side project, and it's a country band!
Butch nabbed buddy Phil Davis from his old Madison band Fire Town, along with musicians Pete Anderson and Frank Anderson for the group, whose self-titled debut is now available.
What may seem unusual about this group is they never got together to record a thing. They never even practiced together..they just sent each other all the parts via file sharing from their home studios.
The magazine Tape Ops did a great in-depth interview with the band members about all the individual songs, which you can read here.
The song they've posted on youtube, Cornfield Palace, contains the great line "She's the Queen of West Allis, in her SUV." And the whole album is filled with references only Wisconsinites will get.
I'm not sure that Emperors of Wyoming will get as much notoriety as Butch's other band Garbage, but I'm betting a lot of their hometown fans will enjoy it.
