I would have thought these folks would have been in the Blues Hall of Fame long ago..but it's just been announced Bonnie Raitt, Lonnie Brooks and harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite will be inducted May 5th in Memphis, the day before the Blues Music Awards, formerly known as the W.C. Handy awards.
I've had the pleasure of seeing all three of these performers live, and was thoroughly entertained by each of them! I've seen Lonnie Brooks a few times, dating back more than 20 years. By far the best was a couple of years ago at the Big Bull Falls Blues Festival in Wausau, where he stole the show even though his set was in the middle of the afternoon.
I got to see Charlie Musselwhite at the Madison Blues Festival, and also as part of a blues revue at the Madison Civic Center. He plays guitar in addition to the harp, and his guitar amp was really acting up at that Civic Center show. So while they switched out the guitar amplifier he kept us entertained with a wild harmonica solo. Then when Elvin Bishop followed him on stage, he commented on the guitar amp problem by saying "can't wait to see what's happened to my stuff!"
I've also seen Bonnie Raitt twice..at the Civic Center and at the Marcus Amphitheatre during Summerfest. She's quite the singer and a really good guitar player as well. I don't know of a lot of females who play the slide guitar, but she really knows her way around the fretboard.
The Blues Hall of Fame does point out that Raitt is more famous for her non-blues work, but says it's recognizing her for devotion to the genre and its musicians.
