Free download: Benjamin Booker

Benjamin Booker is a 25 year old New Orleans musician who's been getting some attention with his debut self-titled album.

He's been on David Letterman's show, toured with Jack White, and was reviewed in Rolling Stone.

Of the song "Violent Shiver," Rolling Stone wrote: "(sounds like) something like the Strokes if they'd been suckled on moonshine in a juke joint."  We're pretty sure that's a compliment.

You can get a free download of "Violent Shiver" by entering your email address on Booker's website here.

Will this be Clapton's last record?

Eric Clapton definitely has retirement in mind. He hinted to Rolling Stone recently that he may quit touring and recording, and only play for family and friends.

We can look forward to at least one more new Clapton record before he hangs up his Strat for good. Eric Clapton & Friends "The Breeze: A Tribute to JJ Cale" comes out next week, and is currently streaming for free in the iTunes store.

The album is a tribute to Cale, who died last year and was Clapton's close friend. Clapton had two pretty big hits with the Cale songs "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," so it will be interesting to hear what he does with other songs written by the blues songwriting master.

Collaboraters on the album include John Mayer, Derek Trucks and Mark Knopfler--each who certainly knows his way around a fretboard, so if nothing else this album is sure to have some crazy good guitar licks.  Add to that JJ Cale's top notch songwriting, and this could wind up to be one of Clapton's best records in recent years. (Tom Petty and Willie Nelson also make appearances on the record).

Check out the title track to the new album here.

Free downloads: The Bayonets

If you were listening to Triple M on the morning of Thursday July 17th, you may have thought somehow we slipped back to 1965.

But it wasn't an old song we were playing--it was a brand new one from the Los Angeles band the Bayonets, called "Crash Boom Bang!"

They don't have an album out, but if you sign up for their mailing list you can get a free four-song EP here.

Who's excited about the new Coldplay song?

Coldplay is supposedly working on a new album to follow their 2011 release, Milo Xyloto. But we don't have to wait until that album comes out, whenever that will be, to hear a new song.

This week the band debuted the song "Midnight" on their website, and will most likely be playing it live when they to go South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

I like the dreamy, ethereal nature of the song, but the vocals seem over-processed to me. What do you think?

You can’t have a good band without world class musicians performing with you. One reason Tom Petty’s albums are so great is the Heartbreakers.

Now Benmont calls on his friends to help with his solo album, 37 years in the making, ‘ You Should be So Lucky”, and with friends like Don Was, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty and Ringo  Starr you’re bound to release an excellent album, which he has.

Here is the first single, “ Blonde Girl, Blue Dress”.

The name Aloe Blacc might not ring a bell, but you have heard his voice before. He’s the voice you hear singing on Avicii’s “ Wake Me Up”
A singer songwriter, rapper and musician burst onto the scene in the mid 90’s, and launched a solo career in 2003.

By 2012 he was nominated for a BRIT award for Best international Male Soul Artist and Best International Break Through Artist.
If you watch TV sports, you definitely heard THIS song, “The Man”

Fresh New Music : Ellen Foley

Remember the Meatloaf song “ Paradise by the Dashboard Light? Well, the female vocalist was Ellen Foley. Although she did not appear in the video, that’s her voice you hear.
Ellen was also the subject of The Clash’s song “ Should I Stay or Should I Go”, written by her, then boyfriend, Mick Jones.
In addition to being the inspiration for a song, she also has an extensive theater background, appearing in Hair, Tootsie and Fatal Attraction, just to name a few as well as the TV Show Night Court.

And now, 30 years after her last album comes a new one!

Here’s a sample of the first single, “ If You Can’t Be Good”.

Fresh New Music : Sleeper Agent

Sleeper Agent is a band from Kentucky that found their sound when they added female vocalist Alex Kandel to their line-up. It apparently was a good decision, since Esquire Magazine called their  music  “most original introduction to a new band we’re likely to hear all year” and Rolling Stone rated Sleeper Agent number 2 in the Best New Band category in 2012.

Here’s a sample of their second album, the very catchy song “ Waves”
