Memories of Michael Jackson

michaeljacksonBack in the 70's, you put girls of my age into two groups. The ones who liked Donny Osmond ("he's dreamy, and he wears purple socks!") and the others who preferred Michael Jackson ("he's super-cute and an excellent dancer"). I was in the Michael Jackson camp. I always enjoyed watching him and the rest of the Jacksons on guest appearances on variety shows, and really got into the whole Jackson thing when they got their own cartoon show. (But I will admit I also liked Tito because he had those cool hats. I made my mom make me a "Tito" hat. It was groovy.) I didn't have any Michael Jackson posters on my wall, but when forced to make a choice it was always Michael over Donnie. For a few years Michael dropped off my radar, until the album "Off the Wall" came out. A couple of years after that, but before Thriller took off, I remember a DJ friend of mine predicting that Michael Jackson would be the biggest star of the 1980's. I thought he was crazy. And of course, I've been following all the bizarre Michael Jackson news over the last 15 years or so...it's an occupational hazard. And apparently celebrity news is so ingrained in my subconscience...I actually had a very strange Michael Jackson dream several years ago that still haunts me to this day. It started off with me being kidnapped by Michael Jackson and being taken to Trump Tower to live with him and Lisa Marie Presley. It ended with me taking him to meet my dad in Stevens Point and playing the song "Ben" for him on my family's piano (the big note easy piano version, of course.) I was never a huge fan of Michael Jackson's music, but I always admired his talent, and was impressed with his astronomical impact on the world. I hope he can now find peace, and get to hang out in a real Neverland ranch that will never face foreclosure. If you're my age or thereabouts, I think this will take you back. It's the intro to the Jackson 5 cartoon. Enjoy!

World's Worst iPod: Kajagoogoo "Too Shy"
Gotta love the '80s! Depending on who you're talking to, Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" is either a song that defines the decade, in a good way, or it's a song that gives all other '80s songs a bad name. It made it to #5 on the charts in...

5 Things You Probably Didn't Know about Birthday Boy Neil Young
Happy 69th birthday to my favorite self-proclaimed "rich hippie," Neil Young. I remember when I was a kid, I hated Neil's voice. I didn't even particularly care for his songs CSNY albums, but the guy grew on me, and he's now one of my...

World's Worst iPod: Mac and Katie Kissoon "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep"
There was a lot of love this morning for a song that made it up to #20 in 1971 for the brother sister team of Mac and Katie Kissoon. The pair hailed from Trinidad and this was their only Top 40 hit.

World's Worst iPod: Robbie Nevil "C'est La Vie"
"That's just the way things go," croons Robbie Nevil in the soong "C'est La Vie." Despite the fact that the theme seemed to fit the way a lot of people feel today, there just wasn't enough to support playing it in its entirety. Released...
