Make Music Madison Gets Incredible Response

If the first-ever Make Music Madison signup is any indication, June 21st will be quite a lively day in Madison's history. Over 100 artists have signed up to give over 250 free performances at over dozens of venues. It's been an amazing response from our entire community and will lead to a very memorable day of music.

Of the 300-some cities that offer this event on June 21st, only New York and Vancouver had more performances its first year. Yes, Madison has greater first-year participation than Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles.

Virtually all genres of music will be performed by musicians of all ages and experience levels in this worldwide event celebrating the summer solstice. Over 450 cities have this annual event, and this will be Madison's first year of participation.

A few notables include: the disco band VO-5 at Bear Mound Park. The Gomers at the top of State Street. Ritt Deitz in front of Madison Children's Museum. MadCAP School of the Arts at Capital Kids. Mama Digdown's Brass band at Monona Terrace. Forward Marching Band, sailing down the Yahara River. Shadow Strings Irish trio at Hilldale Shopping Center. Beltline Street Band New Orleans music at Old Sugar Distillery. Bernie's Bernie's Beach will have continuous Celtic and old-time music most of the day. Library Mall will feature continuous South Asian music in the afternoon and evening from 4 til 8. And Emmy award-winning classical guitarist Jaime Guiscafre will be performing at the Alicia Ashman library.

Most libraries, Dane County Airport, Overture Center for the Arts, Madison Children's Museum and many other public, private, and park spaces will feature music throughout the day. The Hohner harmonica company has donated 100 harmonicas for a massive lesson and concert, with DeWayne Keyes, aka the Harmonica Man. And four fire stations will have pianos out front donated by Grant Billings, available for anyone to stop by and play for a while.

Throughout the evening, musicians will offer paid performances at many Madison clubs and bars.

Volunteers are still needed for the big day, and in preparation leading up to it. Contact info@makemusicmadison.org to find out how.

And check the website as June 21 nears. Some great map-based technology is being created by the volunteer web team, designed to allow people to find every musician and venue throughout the city during the day and evening.

On June 22nd, Madison will have a big smile on its face.

I'm very grateful to everyone who helped me move on. It's sad and surprising to see Sam Lyons go. My wife was even voting for him.

World's Worst iPod: Tiffany "I Think We're Alone Now"
A lot of people have fond memories of that little red-haired mallrat from the 1980s, Tiffany. And they wanted nothing more this morning than to hear her hit "I Think We're Alone Now." Now the only good thing about Tiffany having a hit with this...

Rejected Earth Day celebration ideas*
Like me, you probably try to be Earth friendly every day, but since it is Earth Day, you want to do a little something extra. Here are some ideas I considered, but for some reason decided against. 1. Hold a seance on Gaylord Nelson's grave. The...

Tonight’s song
Dear Superstars, The hours grow closer and closer as I wait to see which one of us is going home tonight. For last week's performance I gave my all to "Drive-By Heartache" and I hope that the judges heard the lyrics and the melodies. For me a song...

Most expensive dishes from around the world. ~Stevi
I never thought I would see the day where chocolate pudding showed up on a list of most expensive dishes. I feel like someone should contact Bill Cosby about this. More outrageiously priced food here; be ready to pick your jaw off the floor. ~Stevi
My Love For Caffeine
I had so much fun with last weeks challenge and performance. The first elimination was really nerve racking and losing Carrel was a big bummer. I am so glad she still played her song because it was BEAUTIFUL. This week, the challenge is...
