Make Music Madison Gets Incredible Response

If the first-ever Make Music Madison signup is any indication, June 21st will be quite a lively day in Madison's history. Over 100 artists have signed up to give over 250 free performances at over dozens of venues. It's been an amazing response from our entire community and will lead to a very memorable day of music.

Of the 300-some cities that offer this event on June 21st, only New York and Vancouver had more performances its first year. Yes, Madison has greater first-year participation than Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles.

Virtually all genres of music will be performed by musicians of all ages and experience levels in this worldwide event celebrating the summer solstice. Over 450 cities have this annual event, and this will be Madison's first year of participation.

A few notables include: the disco band VO-5 at Bear Mound Park. The Gomers at the top of State Street. Ritt Deitz in front of Madison Children's Museum. MadCAP School of the Arts at Capital Kids. Mama Digdown's Brass band at Monona Terrace. Forward Marching Band, sailing down the Yahara River. Shadow Strings Irish trio at Hilldale Shopping Center. Beltline Street Band New Orleans music at Old Sugar Distillery. Bernie's Bernie's Beach will have continuous Celtic and old-time music most of the day. Library Mall will feature continuous South Asian music in the afternoon and evening from 4 til 8. And Emmy award-winning classical guitarist Jaime Guiscafre will be performing at the Alicia Ashman library.

Most libraries, Dane County Airport, Overture Center for the Arts, Madison Children's Museum and many other public, private, and park spaces will feature music throughout the day. The Hohner harmonica company has donated 100 harmonicas for a massive lesson and concert, with DeWayne Keyes, aka the Harmonica Man. And four fire stations will have pianos out front donated by Grant Billings, available for anyone to stop by and play for a while.

Throughout the evening, musicians will offer paid performances at many Madison clubs and bars.

Volunteers are still needed for the big day, and in preparation leading up to it. Contact info@makemusicmadison.org to find out how.

And check the website as June 21 nears. Some great map-based technology is being created by the volunteer web team, designed to allow people to find every musician and venue throughout the city during the day and evening.

On June 22nd, Madison will have a big smile on its face.

There may be snow on the ground again in Madison--but it's time to start thinking about the summer festival season! Both Summerfest and Lollapalooza have announced headliners. Headliners at Summerfest will include Kings of Leon, Ed Sheeran,...

World's Worst iPod: Brighter Side of Darkness "Love Jones"
The song "Love Jones" by Brighter Side of Darkness would probably have long been forgotten, had Cheech and Chong not done a parody version of the song. The group, made up of Chicago high school students, scored a top 15 hit with the song in 1973, but...

The cool thing about Coastal Carolina's coach
This won't be enough to make you root for them, but Coastal Carolina's Coach has some pretty cool musical stuff on his resume. Back in the 1960s, when Cliff Ellis was in college, he was in a garage band called the Villagers, and they cut a...

World's Worst iPod: The Power Station "Some Like it Hot"
Nothing screams the 1980's like The Power Station's "Some Like it Hot." A super-group comprised of Robert Palmer and members of Chic and Duran Duran, The Power Station took this song all the way to #6 in 1985. Enjoy!
Kitty's St. Patrick's Day Pet Peeves
St. Patrick's Day is upon us! Time to wear green, drink beer with green food coloring and talk in bad Irish accents. Or not. I have a few St. Patrick's Day pet peeves, and because I am 3/8ths Irish, I feel compelled to share them with...

Discover & Download: Lord Huron "Fool For Love"
"Lord Huron began as a solo project by Michigan-born/Los Angeles-based musician Ben Schneider in the spring of 2010. These songs were later released as the Into the Sun EP, and Lord Huron was born. The songs quickly gained recognition and a live band was...

World's Worst iPod: England Dan and John Ford Coley "We'll Never Have to Say Goo
When someone says to you "Sappy 70's music," I bet you automatically think of England Dan and John Ford Coley. They had a lot of "soft rock" hits during that decade. We put ED and JFC in the same category as Seals and Crofts, Bread, and later--Air...

World's Worst iPod: Martika "Toy Soldiers"
For some reason, the song "Toy Soldiers" by Martika just made Jonathan & Kitty feel really, really old. The song was #1 for two weeks in 1989 for Martika, who started out in show business as a child actor. She had an uncredited role as an orphan in...
