Lou Reed with Metallica--just the start!

When I read that Lou Reed was teaming up with Metallica for an album, I thought that seemed like a pretty strange combination.

And some critics would agree with me. Their album "Lulu" is just out, and USA Today calls it "the winner in the category of All Time Disappointing Collaboration Between Hall of Fame Inductees," saying it's"tedious" and "tuneless." Rolling Stone is less harsh, saying it's "not as ridiculous as you might think."

I haven't listened to the album....but what I did do was let my mind go wandering about other possible collaborations between members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

How about we get 2011 inductee Neil Diamond together with 2010's The Stooges? If Iggy and Neil can get leave the egos at the door, I'm sure they could come up with some gems. At the very least..I'd love to hear "Cracklin' Rosie" with a harder edge and some killer distortion.

What if Bonnie Raitt teamed up with Van Halen? I think this is a great idea for several reasons..most importantly..she and Eddie Van Halen have at various points in their careers, have had the same haircut. Bonnie could give Eddie some tips on slide guitar, and maybe draw out the blues soul we all know he has, deep down inside.

Or what about this one? We could take the Originator, the Emancipator, the Architect of Rock'n'Roll, Little Richard, and team him up with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. (Henceforth to be known as Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, and Penniman). I always thought if you added a few high pitch "Wooooos" to songs like "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and "Find the Cost of Freedom" they would be real toe tappers.

More Performance Art Than Anything
While I was a big fan of early Metallica, their later stuff was getting stale. Lou Reed on the other hand has withstood the test of time, so I can listen to this with an open enough mind to appreciate the diametrically opposed sounds each artist brings to the collaboration. I think I may even buy the album, errr, I mean CD.
