It was 39 years ago yesterday that National Guardsmen shot and killed 4 people at Kent State University in Ohio. Many people say it changed the anti-war protests--no longer were they just about peace and love and putting flowers in the barrels of soldiers' guns.
I wrote a paper for a Social Criticism class about the incident, and the Crosby Stills Nash and Young song "Ohio." Neil wrote it after reading an article about the incident (I think it was in Newsweek), and the song was released ten days later as a single. (I still have that paper in a closet somewhere!)
The other memory the anniversary probably conjures up for most people is that iconic picture of a young girl with a horrified look on her face, reacting to to the tragedy. Turns out she was a 14 year old runaway, and not even a student at Kent State!
Yesterday, that woman, who is now a respiratory therapist, was reunited on the Kent State campus with the photographer who took the picture. You can read about that reunion here.

Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
