Justice is served

justiceYou may have heard that I was called for jury duty in Dane County this week.  Admittedly, I was not too enthused with the idea because I've heard that it is extremely boring. But faced with the possibility of criminal penalties, I showed up. First of all, I almost went to the wrong building. Despite the fact that the letter I received told me to go the Courthouse, I was headed toward the City County Building. Not a good tactical move since I was already running late. Did you know there's a lot of traffic downtown at around 8am? So I managed to sneak in just in time to hear the jury clerk talk to us about the importance of jury service, and explain to us that the little ticket we received can be used at the cafeteria to get a soda or coffee.  (I was hoping it was a raffle ticket!) Then we watched a 20 minute movie about the importance of jury service. Then we had a short break, and were told to be back by 9:15. Luckily, I brought 2 books, a crossword puzzle book, and my phone to play with....because nothing happened until around 10:25. That's when the jury clerk released about half of us. Seems a few scheduled trials weren't going to be happening after all. So I read some more and did a few puzzles...only cheating a few times (ooh did my cheating tip the scales of justice a little bit?) Then at around 10:50 about half the remaining group was released. I did some more reading. Then I went to cafeteria, where I was told I could not buy a 20 0z. bottle of Lipton Tea with my ticket. It had to be a 2o oz. bottle of SODA or coffee. I chose Diet Mt. Dew. Then at 11:45, we were released. The jury clerk said for the first time in her 23 years working there, all trials were either settled, postponed, or otherwise disappeared. We were free to go, and off the hook for 4 years. Gosh.  I didn't even get to brag about all the legal experience I've gained watching up to three hours of judge shows(People's Court, Judge Joe Brown and Judge Judy!) every afternoon. I'm sure that would have gotten me on a really juicy trial.

The problem with holiday sweaters--and it's not that they're ugly
Holiday sweaters--oh we love to mock them! Ugly holiday sweater parties have become so mainstream that I feel they are no longer ironic. But that's not what I'm going to gripe about. My problem is that ugly holiday sweaters are now becoming...

World's Worst iPod: Carl Douglas "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting"
It's hard to believe a novelty song like this went all the way up the charts to number one---but it did, and actually stayed there for two weeks! It seemed most everyone, excluding our meteorologist Brian Olson wanted to hear this song, which came...

Rock Hall gets it right, honors Stevie Ray Vaughan
When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2015 inductees this morning, I was very happy to see one of the names on the list: Stevie Ray Vaughan. Even though the late Texas guitar slinger has been eligible to get in since 2008, this is the...

Jeff the Promo Guy's Top 2014 Picks
2014 had a ton of great new album releases, and I easily came up with more than 10 to reference. I would have loved to include The Fray, Angus & Julia Stone, Bleachers, Alt-J, and George Ezra… but they just didn't make it on my Top 10 list. Here...
