I was shocked to learn today of the financial roubles being faced by the Hostess company. They've filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
With America's ever growing waistline, how can a classic junk food like Hostess be having trouble? With such a marvelous treasure trove of fat and calories, you'd think folks would be snapping Twinkies, cupcakes, Ho-Ho's and fruit pies off the shelves faster than they can make them!
Apparently sales of the snack cakes were only down 2 or 3 percent last year. Hopefully with the economic recovery that's bound to happen any day now there will be an uptick and sales and that sickeningly sweet cream filling will continue to flow for many years to come.
Personally, my favorite of the Hostess line was always the Suzy Q, which never got as much attention in their advertising campaigns as it should have. More cake, more filling, what could be better than that?
The cupcakes were good too. When you ate one, did you peel off the entire frosting top in one piece and eat it separately? Did you try to unroll Ho-Ho's? Snacks were fun, and fattening!
