Over the next few days there will be candle light vigils, tears and anger. There will be plenty of discussions on how we need to stop unthinkable tragedies from happening. People will wear ribbons. We will see pictures of all the children and teachers who died and we’ll hear Amazing Grace.
But what will happen next?
Remember how sick you felt after the shooting in Arizona where Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was speaking? Remember how upset you felt after the Virginia Tech shooting? The list of random and senseless violence seems to be getting longer and longer and the time between these events is getting shorter and shorter.
This is not an easy problem to solve. I do believe we should have stricter gun laws, but Connecticut has some of the strictest laws in the United States. It didn’t matter. We should have more help for people with mental disorders, but this killer came from a family with money so it wasn’t an issue of access to health care.
It’s almost as if this is a new disease. We have to be smart enough to cure it. This country has risen to great heights in the past to solve problems. I hope we can do it again.
