So as we remember the first 20 years of Triple M...and announce that Wilco is coming back to Madison (Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the Overture Center), I'm reminded of the time that I went to a Cubs game with Jeff Tweedy.
O.K., that might be stretching the truth just a bit. I did go to a Cubs game and Jeff Tweedy was there with me- I just didn't know it at the time.
I was invited to come down to Chicago and watch a game from one of the famous roof-tops across the street from Wrigley Field (BTW- funniest T-shirt spotted last weekend at the Chicago Pride Parade...Wrigley Field- Home of the World's Largest Gay Bar...The REALLY Friendly Confines"). The rooftop that we were on was set up really nice- with an outdoor bar and bleachers- so I grabbed a beer and headed to the bleachers and sat down to watch the game...and do a little people watching. About half-way through the game I heard a bunch of guys inside the stadium yelling in our general direction- "Jeff...Jeff...Jeff!!" they kept yelling. Finally one of them yelled- loud enough to be heard very clearly over the rest of the crowd..."TWEEDY!" And that's when the guy sitting directly to my left gave an embarrased little wave and all the drunk guys who had been yelling cheered for him and I realized who I was sitting next to. I poked my wife and whispered "Hey- that's Jeff Tweedy" and we went on drinking and watching the game.
I don't remember a whole lot more from the day- I didn't ever really sit down and talk with him, but there is one thing I can say with a fair amount of confindence...I'm pretty sure the Cubs lost that day.
..In March Mavis plays a series of dates with Billy Bragg right before he plays ...Jeff Tweedy like he did on the Colbert Report that same week played with Mavis at City Winery in October. Videos from that show Colbert and Jools Holland with all tour dates below...... John even made some snarky remarks to the tune of not exact quotes Thanks for listening the two of you and that the Autumn Defense was a rock band sort of just loud enough that you could still talk over them .

But Tweedy has spent much of the last decade alienating old fans while winning new ones by following an elusive muse thats had him exploring elaborate pop production on Summerteeth avant-garde deconstruction on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the process of which was detailed in the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart and fractured mood pieces on A Ghost Is Born. Between Wilco projects Tweedy has collaborated with friends on albums by Golden Smog The Minus 5 and Loose Fur the latter of which let Tweedy explore the kind of long-form jamming that early Wilco largely eschewed. Some of that sensibility has spilled over into the last few Wilco albums and even the bands latest Sky Blue Sky adds extended instrumental passages to a set of songs as bright and likeable as any since Being There.
Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons.
1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels.
2) I used to...

This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, it is another gorgeous Monday, fit for another great show at the Crystal Corner tonight.
Through locking ourselves in the barn on Irish Lane, tossing some ideas around, as well as a few choice beverages to...
