Some people can't believe I still watch The Simpsons after all these years. It's true and I'll explain why.
When I was a junior here at the University of Wisconsin I went to the Spike and Mike Annual Sick and Twisted Animation Festival at the Majestic Theatre. This was one of the shorts I watched that night:
The Simpsons were already on the Tracy Ulman Show, but the first place I saw them was at this animation festival. There were about four "shorts". I remember thinking they were hysterical and read a few days later that The Simpsons were getting their own show on Fox. I couldn't wait to see it.
I remember watching that first episode (it's the one where they get Santa's Little Helper as their family dog) and I thought it was fantastic. I made it a tradition to watch them EVERY Sunday night. It was really the only time I made a point of watching television. I didn't have a VCR, so I would make sure to watch it live. I didn't miss any episodes. I still don't.
I now have a DVR and I don't have to be in front of the television right at 7pm on Sunday nights. However, I still NEVER miss an episode. I shouldn't say never. There have been 450 episodes of The Simpsons and I've probably missed 3 or 4 total. That's almost never, isn't it?
Many people who used to watch the show with me have disappeared. A lot of them were college friends. Sometimes I'll ask them now if they watch the show and the response is usually the same: "Not really. I'll catch it a couple of times a season but I really haven't watched it in years."
Not me. I'm still dialed in.
The show may not seem as funny and some of the current writers may have only been in 2nd or 3rd grade when I started watching the show, but I feel an obligation to continue.
The list of things that have been with me consistently for 20 years is pretty short. Here it is:
1) My parents and other immediately family
2) The Chicago White Sox
3) A childhood teddy bear that is tucked away in storage
That's it. The Simpsons make that list as well. So maybe some of the episodes aren't the best. The fact that they still make any episodes after all this time is enough. The fact that I've had something to entertain me the last two decades (even if I'm not falling off the couch laughing) is quite a treasure.

There's only one thing that might be worse than the Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." And that's Jonathan Suttin doing his best crooning...doing both parts. Most unpleasant.
