Today former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts turns 68.
Sadly, I never got to see Dickey Betts perform with the Allman Brothers Band, but I have had the opportunity to see him with his band Great Southern twice. The first time was at Summerfest, and the second was at Beloit Riverfest several years ago.
Betts was playing on a Sunday night at 6pm, to be followed by Rick Springfield. It was kind of a weird mixture of characters in the audience for Dickey. I'm not sure what the middle-aged ladies wearing vintage Rick Springfield t-shirts thought of this amazing guitar player who gave us such great songs as "Ramblin' Man," "Jessica" and Blue Sky. And the hardcore Allman Brothers Band folks probably wouldn't be standing up and cheering for General Hospitals Noah Drake.
Before the show started, my boyfriend Mike was up near the fence trying to get a peak at the guitars and other gear up on stage. There was a tall skinny tattooed biker type dude standing up there next to him. Mike asssumed he was another Betts fan, so he asked him, "What do you think he'll open with?"
The guy thought about it for a second or two, and then answered. "I don't know. Jesse's Girl?"
