The names of some sports teams can seem a little strange. Two great examples are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz. You don’t really think about lakes when you’re in Los Angeles and you certainly don’t think of Utah as a place for jazz. However, both teams used to be in different cities. The Lakers were in Minneapolis which is home to 10,000 lakes and the Jazz were in New Orleans. I can understand if those teams would have changed their names when they moved. L.A. could have been the Los Angeles Plastic Surgeons and Utah could have been the Utah Sister Wives.
I’m bringing this up because one team in the NBA is changing its name. The New Orleans Hornets are going to be the New Orleans (drum roll please) PELICANS.
Yes, the New Orleans Pelicans. I agree the New Orleans Hornets didn’t really work. The team came from Charlotte where they apparently have a real insect problem. I also understand the logic behind the name. The team’s owner Tom Benson (who also owns the New Orleans Saints) says he wanted something that represented the state. The pelican is Louisiana’s state bird and it’s recently been taken off the endangered list. Benson says the pelican is a real fighter as it survived the BP oil spill and Hurricane Katrina.
I get it, but it still seems tough to cheer for a pelican.

There's only one thing that might be worse than the Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." And that's Jonathan Suttin doing his best crooning...doing both parts. Most unpleasant.
