What does Gabby have to say?

The Steve Goodman Post Office

I live with a Cubs fan. A die-hard Cubs fan. You know who they are: they start the season with anticipation and hope and end with resignationand disappointment.  One famous Cubs fan was the late Steve Goodman, who died of Leukemia in 1984 at age 36. You hear his " Go Cubs Go" during games. He also wrote "Lincoln Park Pirates " and " A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request"  (see below).  Goodman loved the Cubs and loved Chicago, so it seems fitting that a public building be named in his honor. Rep. Mike Quigley introduced a measure to have the Lakeview Post Office renamed for Goodman. He says the bill is supported by the entire Illinois congressional delegation, The Old Town School of Folk Music and fellow musicians, John Prine, and Corky Siegal. If all goes well, a renaming ceremony can happen by late spring or early summer. That makes me happy.

9/12

It's been a while since I talked politics.  Certainly not because I'm not interested, but because there is just too darn much that makes my brains leak out my ears that I didn't know where to begin. Then we had some hootin' n hollarin' all August, and the speech and a heckler! And birthers and death panels and Nazi's and Kenya and secessionists. What were the Teabaggers concerned about this past weekend?  Was it Citizen Armies?  Facists= Communists= Socialists?  Will Czars get land?  Glenn Beck is a logical thinker!  It's all here for your edification.

Jason VS Rush

These are difficult times in our country, with an economic meltdown , housing crisis and rising unemployment. So what’s the biggest scandal that has everyone talking?

Jason the Bachelor changes his mind and dumps girl #1 on live television and gets back together with girl #2. Yesterday, there were over 1600 comments on this following the story on AOL.  jasonmesnick

But what about the other story? You know, the one where radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh is now the voice of the Republican Party.

Yes, Rush Limbaugh. He of oxycontin, Viagra fame. He who calls women either “femiNazsi’” or  “ hot”.  The one who mocked Michael J Fox and his Parkinson’s disease. The one who said over and over that he wants Obama to FAIL! A talk show host who said if you don’t agree with me “ I don’t ever want you to call me again”.  Yes, that Rush Limbaugh.

rushlimbaugh

So last weekend, Washington DC was the site of the CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Committee meeting. Some of the topics discussed were “Acorn and how Liberals were destroying the Election System”, “2 Minute Activist: Conservative Victories Across the Nation”  “Bailing Out Big Business, Are We All Socialists Now?” “Will Congress Take Your Guns?”.. and on and on.

But the thing that made me sit up and take notice was the awarding of the “Defender of the Constitution Award” to Rush Limbaugh.

Rush gives a one hour speech,  which was aired on FOX News, his “ first nationwide address” and quotes what he says are the fundamental rights of the constitution…” Life Liberty, FREEDOM(?) and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

The only thing is, that’s not in the Constitution, that’s in the  Declaration of Independence.

So when The Nation magazine points that out ( to the Defender of the Constitution award winner) he say’s that’s just another example of “ vast left wing conspiracy”. Damn those left wingers knowing the constitution from the Declaration.

But wait! There’s more! Michael Steele, the chair of the Republican National Committee calls this radio talk show host an “ entertainer” whose show can be “ incendiary”. And he was FORCED TO APOLOGIZE to Rush, saying “ there was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership” ( emphasis mine).

So it appears to me that Rush is now the head of the Republican Party.

We sure live in interesting times.

President Barack Obama

January 20, 2009. I never thought it would get here. Of course I had to stay home and watch TV all day. I knew I'd never get any work done anyway. It was an incredible thing to watch. Over two million people ( and I just heard on TV," no arrests" ) and everyone smiling...everyone cheering...everyone waving American flags...everyone loving one another. It was like Woodstock with politics. And in a way ( at least to this aging hippie) it is the culmination of ideals fought for so many years ago. And Aretha, too! I laughed, I cried. My BFF, Liane Hansen of NPR fame had tickets to the parade. Right after the oath of office she calls. " I'm crying", " Me, too" " I'll call you later" "Bye" The children were totally adorable, especially Sasha. I love this family. Anyway, President Obama has a big job ahead of him. I 'm excited about the future.

GWB Book

It’s just a few short weeks away from Inauguration Day and the end of Bush’s presidency. I for one,  can hardly wait! So I was reading on one of the websites I like to visit, Daily Kos where Bush was thinking about writing his autobiography. Readers were asked to come up with a title for the book.
Here are some of the excellent suggestions: “War and War”…”Presidenting for Dummies”…”My Pet Goat, part 2”… “ Heck of a Job”…”Iraq on $500 Million a Day” and my suggestion, “ I can Haz Legacy?”.
Do you have any good ones?
