The Coolest Wedding Song EVAH!

People have lots of wedding traditions; the garter toss, the toasts at the reception, the first dance, but this family took it to extreme with an amazing surprise for the bride. Bet you wish you were this bride!

Laurel and Hardy Meet Santana

My good friend Charlie sent this to me and I just had to  share it with you. For those who don't remember, Laurel and Hardy were the most popular comedy team in the Golden Age of American movies. They were also a great joke in Blazing Saddles  where the Mayor offers " a laurel and a hardy handshake..." to the new Sherriff. But I digress. Anyway... here's a very cool video.

Just a little more soccer stuff

OK, I'm the first to admit it. I'm not a big sports fan. In fact, I used to say my TV had an "S" Chip... no sports! But I live with not just a Packers fan, but a CUBS fan! Anyway, this has nothing to do with baseball or American football. I'm sure you've seen videos from weddings where the bridal party dances down the aisle or the first dance is choreographed. Well, just see what some soccer players did after a goal!

Dylan and Dooley Do Dylan

Even though MTV wasn't around in the mid 60's doesn't mean there weren't any music videos ( or film since video wasn't around either) A famous one is from the Bob Dylan film  "Don't Look Back." Many people have done parodies of this flash card/ song lyrics film. The most recent I have found is performed by the great character actor/ writer Paul Dooley. You might remember him as the father in Breaking Away or as Wimpy in the Robin Williams " Popeye", or his hysterical scene in Christopher Guest's Waiting for Guffman. Here he is bemoaning the " joys" of aging. Warning... there is an explitive on the screen for a few seconds.

Tiger Woods Rhapsody

I feel bad for Tiger Woods. I mean, really. When did a minor traffic accident where no one was injured become such a major story? Of course the gossip mongers jumped on it, even before anyone knew any specific details. We DO have a 24 hour news cycle which demands content, but content is not fluff or filler... or maybe it is! Once again, Jon Stewart and his crew at the Daily Show expose the media's obsessions.

American Dad and My Morning Jacket

I'm not ashamed to admit it.  I LOVE Seth McFarlane. I think Family Guy is totally the funniest thing on TV right now. But I have to say, I was a little underwhelmed at American Dad. That is until I saw last week's episode where Stan ( the dad) goes to retrieve his daughter from a My Morning Jacket concert only to be captivated by Jim James' voice. He then becomes a fanatic in the true sense of the word, even so far as to follow the band on tour so he can meet James. It kinda reminded me of my obsession with Phish in the early days. Make sure to watch the listings for this to be re-run! Here's a little taste.

RIP Remote Control's Ken Ober

I admit it freely. I LOVE game shows. I grew up on Jeopardy, Password, What's My Line, Let's Make A Deal  The Joker is Wild and of course, the Gong Show. So I was sad to read of the sudden death of game show host Ken Ober. When Remote Control debuted  in 1987 I was totally on board. I mean, really...a snarky show taking place in host Ken Ober's " basement", contestants sitting in recliners and questions about TV, even Colin Quinn as the announcer! Comics Adam Sandler and Denis Leary owe their early success to their affiliation with Remote Control. If you've never seen it, here is a clip, guaranteed to make you want to watch more:   I had forgotten that a very young Adam Sandler was on this show until I found this clip: Host Ken Ober, who went on to later produce Mind of Mencia and The New Adventures of Old Christine, had complained of flu symptoms before he died. No official cause has been announced. Ober was 52.

Weezer Snuggie!

Admit it, you really want a Snuggie this year, don't you! Last year, I made the mistake of snarking on the Snuggie commercial in Tim's earshot and low and behold, for Christmas  I got my Snuggie. ( let's not talk about how he accidentally ordered 4 of them). This year they are coming out in different patterns, even a Tie Dye Snuggie. But NOTHING can beat a Weezer Snuggie! Get yours TODAY!

Never too old to rock and roll!

I had a big birthday recently which kinda freaked me out, until I realized how many rockers are 60+ and still going strong. Bruce Springsteen just turned 60, Robert Plant is 61, Pete Townshed is 64, Mick Jagger is 66 and Sir Paul McCartney is 67! Will they be rocking hard in their 70's? First, check out this clever ad from Australia: Now that was just a funny commercial, but in reality, there are some senior citizens in Britain, called The Zimmers who are rockin' well into their 80's. You might have seen a video of them performing My Generation! ( I can't embed it due to it being disabled), but you can find it on Youtube here . It's worth the click, I promise.  thezimmerszx6Rock out Grandpa!!!

Literal Videos

My friend Darren from Rutabaga turned me on to a genre of music video's that I never knew existed: literal videos. They take the video, and in the style of the artist, simply describe what you are seeing. You gotta take a few minutes to check these out. I KNOW you will watch as many of them as you can find. Here are a few to start you off. The Beatles: James Blunt: Don Henley: Yes, people have way too much free time on their hands.

Whatever, Martha

Confession time. I am not crafty. I can barely glue 2 Popsicle sticks together. I'm no Martha Stewart, not even a Kitty Dunn, whose craft projects make me jealous. So imagine my delight to find "Whatever, Martha" as I surfed the TV channels a few weeks ago. In case you don't carry FLN ( Fine Living Network), Whatever, Martha consists of Martha Stewart's daughter Alexis and her friend Jennifer Koppelman Hutt watching old Martha Stewart Living episodes attempting to do what she does and snarking on them, much like Mystery Science Theater 3000. The last episode I watched had them making a concoction called " Dirt Cake" served in a flower pot with crushed Oreo's, butter, creamcheese, Cool Whip and hidden gummy worms. It looked to be about a million calories and the girls were not as successful as Martha was. On another episode they tried to do Origami. I'm loving this show. I don't feel so bad that I can't do what Martha does. Here's a sample.

Musical Science Lesson: The Elements

They Might be Giants are coming back to Madison this Sunday at 4 PM for a sold out family friendly show at the Barrymore Theater. You remember TMBG for Birdhouse in Your Soul and the theme song to Malcom in the Middle, but your KIDS might know them for their albums "Here come the ABC's" and "Here Come the 123's". Their latest album tackles the world of science with " Here Comes Science" a CD & DVD. One of the songs is " Meet the Elements". This song led me to remember the FIRST song I ever heard dedicated to the Periodic Table, from Math professor/ songwriter Tom Lehrer.

Excessive perkiness

Do y0u work with someone who is relentlessly cheerful? RIP Dom DeLuise

We lost another funny man, Dom DeLuise. He died last night at 75 from kidney failure and respiratory problems. He had also been battling cancer. He was a regular in Mel Brooks movies like 12 Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, Robin Hood : Men in Tights, as well as the Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit  films and several years as host of Candid Camera. Here he is with the late Gilda Radner in a scene from the movie " Haunted Honeymoon".

Beavis and Butthead meet crying hippies

So let's take yesterday's video of the environmental activists wailing and crying over trees and take it one step further. Mike Judge has his slacker youth Beavis and Butthead discovering our hippies in the woods. I love how he can be so timely. Last week they took on Cartman heading to Somalia to be a pirate. But I digress. Here's today's video:

Spring, trees and things

It was a semi lazy, semi production weekend and I' m pretty confident we will soon have Spring. I grew up in a small town in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate NY, and spent a lot of time playing in the woods. I loved the smells, the sounds, the peaceful feelings. Living in a dying resort area, we used to sometime stumble upon abandoned properties where the swimming pools were slowing returning to nature. It was sad knowing they represented a recent time gone by.  abaondonednys But it never made me kneel on the ground wailing and gnashing my teeth, But that's what this group of environmental activists did.  Before you get all up in my face, I am all for conservation, sustainability and living in harmony, But these people, IMHO carriy it a bit too far. You judge.

Totally awesome music video!

As music director, my mailbox is full of emails from record company promoters, ( or music weasels, as we tend to call them).  Everyone writes to tell me their artist is the next big thing and i ought to check out their song/video, yadda yadda yadda.  If I worked 24/7, I'd never get around to listening and watching everything. That being said, I'm very glad to took the time to check out the video from Israeli artist Oren Lavie, ( pronouncer LEAVE-AA). He's a theater director as well as singer/ songwriter and you can certainly see the creativity put into this video. The album, The Opposite Side of the Sea will be released March 10, but is available on itunes today.   Oh yeah, I like the song, too!

World's Worst iPod: Torn Between Two Lovers by Mary MacGregor
