[Free MP3] Atlas Sound - Flagstaff

Atlas Sound is the solo project from Bradford Cox of indie buzz band Deerhunter. Cox's first solo record, Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel was released in '08. After reading a Beck interview while in the sixth grade, Cox learned he could use the family's karaoke machine as a multi-track device. Atlas Sound is Cox continuing to explore the process, his way of using "ideas I can't make work with a five piece band."  On this new record he's created an intimate space you'll keep going back to. Parallax the third release from Atlas Sound is out November 8th on 4AD. Grab a free download of Flagstaff here.

{Free .mp3} New song from Fitz and the Tantrums

Did you catch Fitz and the Tantrums when they played that show at Willow Island last weekend? They're still on the road in support of their album "Pickin' Up the Pieces," and their momentum continues to build. They say their recipe for success is "six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ." Fitz and the Tantrums will be back in the Midwest in late November, playing three shows at the Metro (two are already sold out). In the meantime, here's a free download of a live version of the song "Don't Gotta Work it Out." Enjoy!

[Free MP3] Frightened Rabbit Ep

Frightened Rabbit are a Scottish band lead by Scott Hutchison. They released their debut Sing The Greys in 2006 and have created some pretty amazing music ever since. The band's 2008 release The Midnight Organ Fight even scored "Album of the Year" votes from some music critics. Nobody does a love song better than Frightened Rabbit. They've grown since '06 adding more complex layered arrangements into the mix. Hutchison's strong Scottish vocals and huge choruses have become his signature. The band seem poised for a breakthrough. The Ep includes the song “The Work” featuring vocals from veteran Scottish folksinger Archie Fisher. Grab the new Frightened Rabbit Ep here in exchange for your email address. It's also streaming here if you want to check it out first.

[Free MP3] The Cranberries - Show Me The Way

After almost a decade The Cranberries are releasing Roses, a new studio album in February. The band worked on much of the new record in Limerick and Toronto with producer Stephen Street. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan tells Billboard, "It's kind of picking up where we left off... The whole thing was very lovely. It really came together really nicely. A lot of the tracks were written without really thinking about it. They just came." "It's really cool, the chemistry," O'Riordan continued. "It's really just right. There's something there when we're together that's really good. It's not something that money can buy. It's not really something anyone can really emulate. It's got to do with energy and chemistry and that kind of thing. It's like putting on a perfect pair of shoes. It just fits." Expect Roses to drop on Valentines Day 2012. Grab a free download of the first single Show Me The Way below.

[Free MP3] The Kooks - Junk of the Heart (Happy)

The Kooks dropped their 3rd record Junk of the Heart last month and are currently in the middle of a world tour. The band just wrapped the UK leg and are off to take over the rest of Europe before hitting the states next month. The Kooks recorded the new record in London and New York with Jim Abbiss but then scrapped half the material to hook up with Tony Hoffner who produced the first two records. Lead singer Luke Pritchard felt lost with Abbiss at the helm and brought Hoffner back into the mix to give the band a clear direction and open new doors with production and instrumentation. Pritchard says, "Musically it's quite different. It's a new band, two new guys. The sound of the band has changed quite drastically. Still with the same roots we've always had, melody being really important in our band. It's soul music, the lyrics are quite a lot influenced by what's gone on… you get to a third album and [have] six or seven years on the road." Download an acoustic version of the title track below.

[Free MP3] Cass McCombs - The Same Thing

Cass McCombs will drop his second record of 2011, Humor Risk on November 7th. The eight-song set was produced by McCombs and Ariel Rechtshaid, who also helped out on Wit's End his sixth effort released back in April. The late John Peel once called McCombs "unobtrusively brilliant". McCombs has made a name for himself as a nomad, connecting with European indie rock circles in the early 2000s and more recently with folk-rock fans in the U.S. He's a kind of musicians musician who's fans include Fleet Foxes and Andrew Bird. Domino Records' Kris Gillespie was initially drawn to McCombs' writing. "When you see the lyrics on the printed page, there's such an economy to them that they're almost minimalist. But when he sings them, they become these vivid, detailed stories somehow." Here's the track list for Humor Risk.. 1. Love Thine Enemy 2. The Living Word 3. The Same Thing 4. To Every Man His Chimera 5. Robin Egg Blue 6. Mystery Mail 7. Meet Me At the Mannequin Gallery 8. Mariah (sketch) Grab a free download of The Same Thing below and let me know what you think. [Free MP3] Veronica Falls - Bad Feeling

London foursome Veronica Falls have created quite a buzz for themselves. Their first record deal came just ten minutes after the launch of their myspace page. Now signed to U.S. indie label Sumberland, home of Stereolab and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Veronica Falls are set to release their debut full-length October 17th. The four piece originally hail from Glasgow, Scotland and include Roxanne Clifford (guitars/vocals), Patrick Doyle (drums), James Hoare (guitar), and Marion Herbain (bass). James suggests their music is heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground. There's also a 60's brit-pop vibe here. Roxanne adds, "I'm a really big fan of Roky Erickson lyrics. They're quite twisted, almost beyond madness in some places." So far they all have day jobs and admit they're not a career band.. as of yet. That could change as Patrick points out, "Obviously everyone harbours ambitions of being able to make a living out of something they enjoy doing." Grab a free download of "Come On Over" from their upcoming debut. Come On Over by Veronica Falls

[Free MP3] Neon Indian - Fallout

Neon Indian is Alan Palomo a 22 year old Texan who released his debut record Psychic Chasms in 2009. Palomo describes his music as, "Childhood re-contextualized through a psychedelic, lo-filter. The idea of memory before you were old enough to have memories." Who doesn't want to be a part of that? Neon Indian's sophomore release Era Extrana drops September 13th. Palomo's father enjoyed some success as a recording artist in Mexico. Although he was brought up around music, Palomo didn't learn how to play an instrument until he was in high school. Then he found a synth at a pawn shop that inspired him to experiment with an old Casio Rapman. He ran it through distortion pedals looping drum beats and more to come up with much of the Neon Indian sound we hear today. Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste is a huge fan of Palomo. In fact, Neon Indian has done a couple of remixes for Grizzly Bear in the past. Fallout is the the first single from the upcoming release. You can stream it here, or grab a free download in exchange for your email address below.

{Free .mp3} Fitz and The Tantrums Live!

"Fitz and The Tantrums are not just a band, they're an explosion!" When a band  makes a claim like that on their website, they better be able to back it up. And from all accounts, they can do that. They'll be at Summerfest on Saturday July 2nd. They're on at 8pm at the Miller Lite Oasis, right before Maroon 5.  Expect the crowd to be standing on the benches belting out "Moneygrabber" at the top of their lungs! {Free .mp3} New song from Bon Iver

Eau Claire native Justin Vernon, who records as Bon Iver, has a new album coming out in June, and Rolling Stone says he's going the other direction from the stark, stripped down feel of his first album, which was called "For Emma, Forever Ago." The new album will be called titled "Bon Iver, Bon Iver," and the magazine says the first single, "Calgary," is full of rich sonic detail. It sounds kinda trippy, if you ask me. You can't buy the new album until June 21, but you can stream the single on the Bon Iver website, and you can even download it for free if you give them your e-mail address. Click here if you'd like to check it out. If you like what you hear, you can go see Bon Iver at the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee July 22 and 23. -Posted by Kitty Dunn

{Free .mp3} 2 songs from The Head and the Heart

It was only a little over a year ago that the Seattle band The Head and The Heart was burning copies of their self-titled debut CD, putting them in handmade denim sleeves, and selling lots of copies at record stores in their hometown. Now they've been signed to SubPop records, their record has been remastered and re-released..and even vinyl copies were made to release on Record Store Day. We've been playing the song "Lost in My Mind," and it's really quite catchy-- with some nice harmonies going on. Right now The Head and the Heart is on tour with Iron and Wine, and will play Turner Hall in  Milwaukee June 7th. If you sign up for their email list, you can download "Lost in My Mind" and another one for free. Check it out here. --Posted by Kitty Dunn

{Free .mp3} New song from Tedeschi Trucks Band

Any one who's been following Susan Tedeschi for awhile probably knows she's married to Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks..and that they've been known to hook up musically as well. At the end of 2009, they formed a band and called it the Derek Trucks Susan Tedeschi Band. Now they've shortened the band's name to the Tedeschi Trucks Band..and they've recorded an album, "Revelator," which is expected to be released in June. If you sign up for the band's newsletter, you can get a free download of one of the songs. It's called "Bound for Glory," and it's a good one! It's got a bluesy gospel feel, some great slide guitar solos from Derek..and Susan demonstrates her powerful voice. You do have to wait 'til the very end of the song for her to really belt it out..it's not quite "Hurts So Bad," but it does the trick. If this song is any indication, it appears that husband of hers has reawakened Susan's bluesy side, something that we've been missing since "Just Won't Burn" blew us all away back in 1998. To sign up for the newsletter and get the download emailed to you, click here. --posted by Kitty Dunn

[Free .mp3] Redlight King remake of Neil Young's "Old Man"

The title of Redlight King's first single - "Old Man" - from their debut album Something for the Pain should sound eerily familiar to avid Neil Young fans.  Young, who rarely entertains sampling requests, seems to be softening in his mature years. Against popular assumption (and reality), lead singer Kaz was able to persuade Neil to allow the band to pay homage to his song of the same name.  Redlight King's version of "Old Man" is not a cover.  Rather, it offers up a reluctant salute to Kaz's own father, a larger-than-life figure who taught school by day and raced stock cars at night. When you hear the song, you're going to be able to feel it.  Check out the video here: Click here to download "Old Man" for free!

[Free download] New song from R.E.M.

COLLAPSE INTO NOW, R.E.M.'s new studio record comes out this Tuesday (March 8th). The album was produced by R.E.M. and Jacknife Lee and features guest appearances from Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Joel Gibb, Peaches, and Eddie Vedder. Mike Mills calls it their best album since "Out of Time," telling Rolling Stone Magazine it includes "balls-to-the-wall rockers, slow sad songs, great mid-tempo songs in the tradition of R.E.M. We had quality, top to bottom." One thing they do have is some great song titles. In addition to "Mine Smell Like Honey" which you've probably heard, there are songs called "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando & I," and one I'm really looking forward to.."Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter," that sounds like it will be great to jump rope to! Paul Simon has a new album out next spring, called "So Beautiful or What."  And he's got a little holiday treat for us--a song called "Getting Ready for Christmas Day." Paul says it's "one of the best tracks he's recorded in years." Find out more about the song in this video.

[Free .mp3] Fitz and the Tantrums

One album I can NOT stop listening to is Fitz and the Tantrums “Pickin’ Up the Pieces”, a soul-influenced group from LA.  Apparently I’m not the only one, because in just one year, this multi-ethnic high energy band went from playing living rooms to the main stage. The instrumentation is perfection and the songs bring us back to the memories of the golden age of soul music. However, Fitz and the Tantrums are not a “throwback” to the 60’s. They lovingly take the genre to a contemporary place, looking very dapper while doing so.

[Free .mp3] The Decemberists

When you play in a band (presumably) named after an early nineteenth-century Russian uprising, fronted by a dude from Oregon who writes novels, and that is often the recipient of positive album reviews that make liberal use of the words “shanty” and “accordion,” the last thing anyone expects out of you is any semblance of rock-and-roll swagger. Well, on their new track, “Down by the River,” the lead single from January’s just-announced The King Is Dead, the Decemberists … still sound like precise folk-rockers. But, in a trend begun on 2009’s The Hazards of Love, there’s an appreciated extra layer of oomph . You can snag a FREE download here: http://bit.ly/aUzRnM

[Free Download] Sean Lennon shines in his new band

The Lennon legend still reins. John Lennon’s son, Sean, has formed a new band named The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. Together with partner/girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Sean shines with a 60’s folk pop sound. While some may write off the band because of Lennon’s incredibly famous parents and Kemp Muhl’s teen model and actress status, the two have proved themselves to be gifted musicians and songwriters. While Lennon covers lead vocals, Kemp Muhl delicately backs him up and adds a whimsical appeal with a plethora of different instruments. Their debut album, Acoustic Sessions, is full of tracks with almost eerie melodies that would seem at home in an Alice in Wonderland scenario. These two artists complement each other in just the right way and that chemistry has enabled Sean to produce his best work yet. [Staff Picks of the Week] Mavis Staples + Jeff Tweedy, Florence and the Machine/

Huey Lewis & The News - Soulsville

This week I received a CD that excited me for 2 reasons. One, it’s the first album in 9 years released by Huey Lewis and the News, one of rocks great party bands, and second, it’s a tribute to Memphis Soul! Recorded at historic Ardent Studio’s in Memphis, “ Soulsville” has 14 songs from the vaults of Stax Records including “Respect Yourself” and “Got to get You Off My Mind”. I can’t stop listening to it, and you can too when it’s released November 2.

You Are Not Alone by Mavis Staples

When I heard that soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples was teaming up with Jeff Tweedy, I wasn't sure what to expect. It seemed an odd pairing..the guy from Wilco producing an album by the same woman who belted out "I'll Take You There" with the Staple Singers. What we ended up getting with “You Are Not Alone” is a soulful album, filled with great song choices. Staples says the songs Tweedy chose showed that he really knew what she was all about, and you can tell she’s really into what she’s singing. Check out this acoustic version of the title song, featuring Mavis and Tweedy.

Ezra Furman and the Harpoons + Free Download

A few weeks ago The Nod came in to play for us during the morning show.  These guys are great, but today's post isn't about them.  It's about a band they've turned me on to called Ezra Furman and the Harpoons. Brett from The Nod says the lead singer really does a lot for his fans including writing personalized songs for fans that send him their interests/feelings.  The group seems to have a good sense of humor too. Here's the bio on the bass players: "Bassist Job Mukkada is a singer-songwriter in his own right, but staunchly avoids the limelight because of his citrus allergy." Check out the video for their single: "Take Off Your Sunglasses". Plus you can download "Take Off Your Sunglasses" for free!

String Quartets and such

I've been hooked on instrumental covers of music for a long time.  And highest on the list of musicians in that field is the Vitamin String Quartet who have carved a successful career out of hard rock and all kinds of different music, ranging from Lady Gaga to Coldplay to Rise Against. You can catch a lot of their music on Youtube and I believe it's available on iTunes as well.  Check out this song below where they have covered "Snow (Hey Oh)" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Awesome stuff.

Florence & the Machine Covers Bruce Springsteen

I am a HUGE fan of Florence & the Machine and I also love Bruce Springsteen and Kid Harpoon.  So there is really one way to describe a Springsteen cover by Florence and Kid Harpoon: Magic. The pair did a cover of the song I'm Going Down. If you're worried these artists have ruined Bruce, don't be.  They respect the original while still putting themselves into it.  Both of these artists have amazing voices and the power of their harmonies mixed with the simple acoustic guitar is perfection. Check out a fan made video below or click here for the .mp3!

Silversun Pickups "Lazy Eye"

It seems I am developing somewhat of a theme each week - I keep discovering bands that are already "old news" to some - but like television re-runs, if you haven't seen it, it's "new to you!" I've been hearing a lot of buzz about Silversun Pickups for the last year or two, and upon finally hearing the music myself I can see what the buzz is about. Silversun Pickups is a four piece, Grammy Award-nominated indie alternative rock band from LA. It's got a minimalist sound, with repeated chords. It's dense and layered, making heavy use of guitars for rhythms. It's all very trance-like without being electronica. It has emotive highs and lows, but it's not angry. There's distortion, but it's not dissonant. The whole song sounds like it's rolling, if that makes sense. The band released their debut EP, Pikul, in July 2005, and their debut full-length album, Carnavas, on July 26, 2006. Their second full length album, Swoon, was released on April 14, 2009. Check out this acoustic performance of "Lazy Eye" at KNDD in Seattle

[Free Download] John Lennon spirit on Rubber Soulive

Jazz and funk trio, Soulive, released their latest album, Rubber Soulive, on September 15th.  In honor of John Lennon's upcoming 70th birthday, we would like to share with you a few Lennon tracks off this instrumental release.  Soulive, made up of drummer Alan Evans, Hammond organ and piano player Neal Evans and guitarist Eric Krasno, is a Buffalo based group that has, musically, covered a lot of ground. Jazz, hip-hop, rock, soul, funk, R & B, Blues – musically, there is not much the band hasn’t done.  The boys had long been in talks to do a Beatles cover album and thought now was the perfect time.  The album has a twining of respect for the originals and flavorings of the host band. Track Listing:
  1. Come together
  2. Eleanor Rigby- I Want You (Shes So Heavy)
  3. In My Life
  4. Something
Click here to download! Soulive will be making a stop at the Orpheum this November 20th!  Make sure you check them out! Watch a performance of the guys playing Eleanor Rigby - I Want You (She's So Heavy) below!

[Free Download] New track from Sheryl Crow and Justin Timberlake

On Sheryl Crow's latest album, 100 Miles from Memphis, she enlists the help of Justin Timberlake for a cover of Terence Trent D'Arby's Sign Your Name.  The collaboration was a happy accident.  Crow had been recording and bumped into Timberlake in the hallway.  When he heard the track he immediately wanted to cover the background vocals.  The result is a beautiful mash up of their distinct voices that flows perfectly with the Memphis style tune.  Thank you kismet. Get a free download of the track and also see footage of Sheryl and Justin in action below!

[Free Download] Unreleased Coldplay "Wedding Bells"

Contrary to what the band said earlier this year, its new album will not be coming out in 2010. Chris Martin had said in February Coldplay was hard at work on the follow-up to Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends  and were aiming for a Christmas release.

Coldplaying.com reported that the band shared the news of the postponement as just a case of being behind schedule. Chris said that although the band is close to finishing a lot of tracks, nothing is completely done, not even the new song “Wedding Bells” that he debuted at Steve Jobs’ latest Apple Conference.

It looks like 2011 will be the year for Coldplay fans. Check out the newest track “Wedding Bells” below. You can also download a Free Coldplay Album as a thank you to their fans.

[Album Review] The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang

New Jersey natives, The Gaslight Anthem released their third studio album, American Slang, on June 15.  Despite the buzz throughout the "blogosphere," I was reluctant to climb on board the bandwagon.  I had no experience with their previous music and was only familiar with the band through a couple of magazine and blog articles.  Through this early research, my understanding of the band was they are considered "punk" and that there were Bruce Springsteen comparisons.  I was slightly confused and struggled to connect the dots of a fairly new and young "punk" band and The Boss.  But, finally after a month, I got my hands on a copy and gave the record a listen. What I surprisingly found was a connection of the dots that was partnered with a refreshing sound.  Somehow, throughout American Slang sound elements of both "punk" and Springsteen are present and working.  I don't know if a self fulfilling prophecy based on my prior reading, but lead singer Brian Fallon's voice sounds as if Bruce Springsteen took a punk route.  Maybe it is just a New Jersey thing.  But, to clarify, the sound of The Gaslight Anthem floats somewhere between Bruce and Punk creating a great alternative rock sound. The Gaslight Anthem have released two studio albums prior to American Slang: Sink or Swim in 2007 and The '59 Sound in 2008.  American Slang has been greeted with great critical and sales acclaim, moving 27,000 copies in its first week while charting number one among independent releases and 16 on the Billboard 200. Despite the album being only ten tracks and 34 minutes in length, it packs a catchy punch.  On multiple occasions, I found myself listening to the entire album before I even realized it had finished.  A good sign due to the lack of change track moments, but sad that the record finishes so quickly.  Overall, the album is well done.  A fun listen and recommended to anyone looking for a new alternative band to follow. Check out and download The Gaslight Anthem's track "The Diamond Church Street Choir" off American Slang. The Diamond Church Street Choir (click to download) In other Gaslight Anthem news, it was recently announced that they will be in Madison on September 19 playing a show at the Majestic Theatre.  Head over to the Majestic to grab yourself tickets starting July 23. Lastly, here is a video of The Gaslight Anthem and Bruce Springsteen jamming together last sumemr at Hyde Park in London. -Sam Ryan

[Music News] Ringo and Paul Reunite! New Brandon Flowers video, Wilco to Start

Ringo and Paul Reunite to Rock Ringo's Birthday Ringo Starr celebrated his 70th birthday Wednesday night in New York City and got by with a little help from a friend.  Paul McCartney unexpectedly joined Ringo on stage to perform the Beatles' track "Birthday" for the frenzied crowd.  This unexpected performance united the last living members of the Beatles as Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia watched from off stage.  Lucky for us, a dedicated fan shot video of the performance with a camera or phone so the rest of the world could see this historic meeting.  Check it out below.  more info Brandon Flowers Saved by Charlize Theron in "Crossfire" Video If you have listened to Triple M a bit recently you have possibly heard Brandon Flowers new single "Crossfire" on the station.  Flowers will be releasing his first solo album titled Flamingo on September 14 with "Crossfire" being the solo for the upcoming album.  The official video for Brandon Flowers new single has been released and features actress Charlize Theron fighting off ninjas to save the troubled Flowers.  Check out the video and let us know what you think of the new Brandon Flowers track.  more info Wilco to Start Own Record Label According to guitarist Nels Cline, Wilco's next move is to write new material for a new album.  This makes sense for a band to do, but what is interesting is how the material will get to fans.  Wilco will likely be leaving their current label, Nonesuch, while establishing their own record label.  Details are vague and the process of creating their own label is still in the early stages, lacking a name even.  The implications of a transition are unknown as of now, but as details emerge Triple M will be sure to let you know.  Regardless of what happens, Wilco will still be writing great music for their fans to enjoy.  more info KT Tunstall Returns with "Push That Knot Away" Singer songwriter KT Tunstall is back and preparing for the release of her new album Tiger Suit this September 28.  Tunstall has released the video for the track "Push That Knot Away," a track she calls a "signature" track that features her attempt to mix acoustic picking with a bit of electronica.  The track has a very different feel from her past work, but something after a first listen I can dig.  Give the track a watch and a listen here. New Strokes Album Expected Next March The Strokes have not recorded a new album since their 2006 release First Impressions of Earth.  This is way too long in my book.  But no fear Strokes fans, the word is that the band is planning to release a new album in March 2011.  Lead singer Julian Casablancas told BBC 6 Music that the album is about half way done and the band continues to procrastinate to get the album wrapped up.  As much as I hope a new album hits stores March 2011, if judging by these remarks and history it may be a bit longer.  more info Learn to Play The National with The National! Have you ever wanted to play a jam off The National's most recent album High Violet?  Well now yon can with a little help from The National's own Aaron Dessner.  Dessner swung through Canada's "Q" TV and recorded an instructional video for the piano portion of the track "England" from High Violet.  Dessner describes the piano portion as "quite simple," but you can decide that for yourself.  Check the video out here along with more info. Kid Cudi, Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij, and Best Coast Free Download Converse, yes the shoes, released a free download of an exclusive new track titled "All Summer" that features Cleveland rapper Kid Cudi, Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij, and LA based Best Coast.  This collaboration can be heard and downloaded at the Converse site along with video introductions of the involved musicians.  A bit of a different feel than the usual Triple M track, but give it a try and let us know your thoughts!  By the way, sorry about Lebron Cudi... -Sam Ryan

Scientists ask how is Ozzy Osboune still living Scientists at the US company Knome will begin a project to learn more about the difference in effects of substance abuse on individuals.  The question of how some people are affected more negativly than others over years of excessive abuse is the question.  What better specimen to analyze than former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne.  The scientists will fully analyze Ozzy's genome to hopefully get a better look at the issue.  Ozzy himself has described himself as a "medical miracle" after a 40 year bender.  more info New Macy Gray Album, Stream Now Before June 22 Release Singer Macy Gray known for her 1999 hit "I Try" is returning to music with a new album titled The Sellout which will be released June 22.  If you are a Macy Gray fan or are just curious to hear what Macy has been up to, Billboard is streaming the entire album through their site before the official release date.  Gray has released 3 albums since 1999, but all failed to bring Macy back to the charts. [Free Download] The Killers, Keane, Mumford and Sons, Long Winters, Noah and th

The recently formed super group consisting of drummer Ronnie Vannucci of The Killers, Long Winters singer John Roderick, Noah and the Whale fiddle player Tom Hobden, Mumford and Sons banjo player Winston Marshall and Keane keyboardist and vocalist Tim Rice-Oxley has released a free download off their forthcoming full length album. The band goes by the name Mt. Desolation and recently played their first live show together earlier this week.  Despite the mix of sounds and styles between the members and their bands, Mt. Desolation has described their sound as alternative country. It is difficult to put a finger on the exact direction of Mt. Desolation due to a lack of released material, but based off the first released track "State of Our Affairs" the sound is very gentle.  I do hope that some future tracks are more uptempo while rocking more banjo and fiddle. As a fan of all the involved bands along with alternative country in general, I am really looking forward to more material from Mt. Desolation.  When more news about or releases by Mt. Desolation emerge Triple M will be sure to keep you updated. For a free download of Mt. Desolation's track "State of Our Affairs" follow this link. -Sam Ryan

[Free Download] Coldplay side-project "Apparatjik"

Apparatjik is a Swedish word for the Russian originated term apparatchik which describes "people who cause bureaucratic bottlenecks in otherwise efficient organizations."

or...

Apparatjik is the recently formed band consisting of Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, guitarist/keyboardist Magne Furuholmen of a-ha, singer/guitarist Jonas Bjerre of Mew, and producer Martin Terefe.  This interesting mix of artists and sounds has created a band with a light synthesizer driven sound and unstressed vocal lines.  Apparatjik has a gentle melodic sound that after only a few listens has created an anticipation and a want for more material.

Apparatjik released a studio album earlier this year titled "We Are Here" and has recently released a free EP available through download at their slightly confusing website.  If you are a fan of Coldplay, a-ha, Mew or melodic synthesizers in general give this free download a listen.  Here is a link to the Apparatjik free download site (note: you need to fill in your name, email, and nation and you will receive an email with the download attached). Hope you enjoy and keep checking back for more downloads and news from Triple M!

[Free Download] Trent Reznor side project, How to Destroy Angels

Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor has returned with a new band with a new EP.  How to Destroy Angels is a new band consisting of Trent Reznor, Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig, and Atticus Ross. The group formed and recorded their debut self-titled EP earlier this year and released this first release as a free download on June 1.  The band is named after the 1984 Coil song by the same name. How to Destroy Angels has an interesting sound that has been described as post-industrial dark ambient rock.  There are similarities between the more recent Nine Inch Nails releases and some heavy aspects of How to Destroy Angels.  How to Destroy Angels is lead by the vocals of Mariqueen Maandig, with precise drum hits, and melodies by both guitars and synthesizers. The six track EP can be had as a free download through the band or a high quality version for $2.  My two cents for this release are the track "Fur-Lined" and the awesome album cover art designed by Rob Sheridan. While the future of Nine Inch Nails is in unsettled, fans of Reznor's work will have some new music to give a chance.  Whether you are a huge NIN fan or are just looking to expand your music collection and give a new sound a chance, the free download of How to Destroy Angels' first EP can be found here.

Indie-folk and Rock 'n' Roll Holiday .mp3s, Download for Free

Come one and come all for another gift in the Fresh New Music blog, just in time for Christmas...free .mp3s! These are perfect for those who like to get into the Holiday spirit but are tired of the same old tunes. Take a moment to check out and download these great Christmas tracks that range from beautiful indie-folk, raging psychedelia and unadulterated no-nonsense rock 'n' roll. playbutton_triplemJon Troast "The Last Needle" 52h4_JonTroastRecorded in Nashville this fall during the sessions for his forthcoming Living Room album, singer-songwriter Jon Troast delivers a heartfelt folk-tinged ballad filled with love and longing during the Christmas season. Jon Troast's new full-length album Living Room drops January 19, 2010.
No musician [including Radiohead and Bruce Springsteen] has proved more ingenious at staying ahead of the economic paradigm shift than Wisconsin singer/songwriter Jon Troast. - World Magazine
For more info on Jon Troast go to: www.jontroast.com
playbutton_triplemVandaveer "The Little Drummer Boy" playbutton_triplemVandaveer "Silent Night" playbutton_triplemVandaveer "Auld Lang Syne" 52h4_Vandaveer1These three beautifully frail holiday gems from the DC-based indie-folk duo Vandaveer (aka Mark Heidinger and Rose Guerin) were originally recorded and released in 2007 for their EP titled  "VNDVR - XMSEP" Vandaveer's recent album Divide & Conquer (on Supply & Demand Music) is in stores now.
Superb. Vandaveer’s Divide & Conquer avoids the sophomore slump by miles and miles. - POPMATTERS
For more info on Vandaveer go to: www.vandaveer.net
playbutton_triplemCracker "Merry Christmas Emily" 52h4_cracker1_1Back in 2001 Cracker co-founders David Lowery and Johnny Hickman originally wrote and recorded their holiday track “Merry Christmas, Emily” as an ode to ex-girlfriends everywhere for their Forever album. When asked about the origins of the song Johnny admits that this “was written in about an hour... both of us laughing our asses off in Tucson drunk. All the places mentioned [in the song] we were stopping at for drinks all day... In THOSE days,” he laughed. You can also view Cracker's (self-admitted "low-budget") video of "Merry Christmas, Emily" here. Cracker's most recent full-length effort Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey (on 429 Records) is in stores now.
Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey may be Cracker's strongest record to date, with punk- and glam-fueled tunes jostling alongside the band's hooky pop-Americana mainstays. - BILLBOARD
For more info on Cracker go to: www.crackersoul.com
playbutton_triplemThe Buffalo Killers "Run Run Rudolph" playbutton_triplemThe Buffalo Killers "Christmas Time" Recorded back in December of 2006 as part of their WOXY.com Lounge Acts performance the Cincinnati-trio Buffalo Killers are offering up these two wonderfully manic holiday covers [one of Chuck Berry's "Run Run Rudolph" and the other "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)" a lesser known number from The Beatles' 1967 Christmas fan club flexi-disc]. Buffalo Killer's most recent full-length effort Let It Ride (on Alive Records) is in stores now.
52h4_buffalokillers The Buffalo Killers sound like the bastard sons of the James Gang and the Black Crowes. It’s organic, dripping with down home funk, oozing with soul, draped in grittiness and filled with tasty, but not overwhelming guitar licks. The band’s sophomore set, Let It Ride, hits on all cylinders and will definitely require repeat listenings. – Real Detroit Weekly
For more info on Buffalo Killers go to: www.alive-totalenergy.com Our friends at Pavement PR wanted to share a few holiday-themed mp3 chestnuts from some of the remarkable talents they've had the pleasure to help out this year. Enjoy!
