R.E.M. LAUNCH âIT HAPPENED TODAYâ REMIX PROJECT    DOWNLOAD RAW TRACKS AND CREATE YOUR OWN REMIXES OF âIT HAPPENED TODAY,â A SONG FROM BANDâS UPCOMING ALBUM, COLLAPSE INTO NOW
In keeping with R.E.M.âs ongoing commitment to giving their fans an interactive musical experience, the band have announced an exciting remix project in conjunction with âIt Happened Today,â a track on R.E.M.âs upcoming new album Collapse Into Now, which is due from Warner Bros. Records on March 8th.
R.E.M., and Collapse Into Nowâs producer, Grammy-Award winner Jacknife Lee, are offering you the opportunity to remix the entirety of âIt Happened Todayâ from the ground up by distributing the raw source for the song as both a Garageband file for Apple Macintosh computers, or as raw stem audio files for other platforms. Lee, himself, has prepared both sets of files, which delivers the song in its "raw" state with no reverb, mixing, or effects.
Visit the bandâs website, www.remhq.com, and download all 16 tracks Lee used to create the song, including vocals by Michael Stipe and Mike Mills, as well as those by special guests Pearl Jamâs Eddie Vedder and The Hidden Camerasâ Joel Gibb, plus Peter Buckâs guitar and mandolin, Millsâ signature bass, and brass ensemble tracks from Bonerama. After creating their own versions of the song, you are invited to submit your remixes on the bandâs website to share with the members of R.E.M. and other fans around the world.
âIt Happened Todayâ is currently available on iTunes as an âInstant Downloadâ track for those who pre-order Collapse Into Now.
Ben Folds performs live at the Overture Center Thursday, January 27th in support of his new release Lonely Avenue. His 6th solo record is a collaboration with Nick Hornby author of High Fidelity. Hornby handed the lyrics over to Ben who then set the short stories to music recording all eleven songs in analog onto two inch tape.
But this wasn't the first time Folds had asked for Hornby's assistance. Over the years they had unknowingly developed a mutual admiration for each other's work. Then in 2002 as Ben Folds was working on William Shatner's Has Been record, he reached out to Hornby asking him to help write some songs for Shatner. With Lonely Avenue, Hornby again marked a definitive starting point for each song surprisingly yielding an even wider creative palate for Folds to develop the music to. There's moog synthesizer , string arrangements, horns and much more on the record.
Street Corner Symphony from NBC's The Sing Off will be the opening act on the 27th. Â Folds is a judge for the a capella talent search. Â He'll have a four piece behind him when he takes the stage next Thursday. Last year he once performed songs on video chat site Chatroulette while on stage in front of thousands. Â He likes to be unpredictable and has a tendency to improvise feeding off the audience during his performances which should make for a fantastic night out.

I'm digging it!

Check out this really great video biography created for Gregg Allmanâs Rounder debut; Low Country Blues. This is Greggâs first solo album in 15 years.
This past June, Gregg underwent a successful Liver transplant. His recovery was quite rapid - and (in a sense) this has given him an opportunity to replenish his commitment to making incredible music.
You can pre-order the album here - there are a few specials available including the immediate digital download of three tracks from Gregg's new CD, t-shirts, a beautiful limited edition poster autographed by Gregg, and a vinyl copy of the album.
All of the songs selected by Gregg are Blues Classics: Sleepy John Estesâ âFloating Bridge.â, Little Miltonâs âBlind Manâ Skip Jamesâ âDevil Got My Woman".
The notable exception is the first single, âJust Another Riderâ that Gregg co-wrote with Warren Haynes. Itâs a archetypal Allman Bros influenced song that only Gregg could sing with such laconic acumen.
So, if you ever wanted to encapsulate Wilco in a beverage, now is your chance because you can get a cup of fresh Wilco direct trade coffee.
According to their website, "This past Fall, some members of the band dropped by our neighbors Intelligentsia's Cupping Lab to select their favorite coffee. The unanimous selection is the Single Origin, Organic Ethiopia Sidama Homecho Waeno. This coffee comes from the Sidama region of Ethiopia and is grown by the Homecho Waeno co-op..."
What does it taste like?"The aromatics of coffee blossom and violet make way for an incredibly graceful and elegant cup. The body has a light and silky quality, like fresh whipped cream, that beautifully compliments the ever-present note of citron, juniper berry and vanilla. As it cools, the cup blossoms into notes of confectioner's sugar, rosehips, and soft raisin, resonating on a pristine finish with a touch of milk chocolate."
The coffee will start shipping on December 9th. It will cost $21 per pound and comes as whole bean only.
This week I received a CD that excited me for 2 reasons. One, itâs the first album in 9 years released by Huey Lewis and the News, one of rocks great party bands, and second, itâs a tribute to Memphis Soul!
Recorded at historic Ardent Studioâs in Memphis, â Soulsvilleâ has 14 songs from the vaults of Stax Records including âRespect Yourselfâ and âGot to get You Off My Mindâ.
I canât stop listening to it, and you can too when itâs released November 2.
You Are Not Alone by Mavis Staples
When I heard that soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples was teaming up with Jeff Tweedy, I wasn't sure what to expect. It seemed an odd pairing..the guy from Wilco producing an album by the same woman who belted out "I'll Take You There" with the Staple Singers.
What we ended up getting with âYou Are Not Aloneâ is a soulful album, filled with great song choices. Staples says the songs Tweedy chose showed that he really knew what she was all about, and you can tell sheâs really into what sheâs singing.
Check out this acoustic version of the title song, featuring Mavis and Tweedy.
Ezra Furman and the Harpoons + Free Download
A few weeks ago The Nod came in to play for us during the morning show. These guys are great, but today's post isn't about them. It's about a band they've turned me on to called Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.
Brett from The Nod says the lead singer really does a lot for his fans including writing personalized songs for fans that send him their interests/feelings. The group seems to have a good sense of humor too.
Here's the bio on the bass players: "Bassist Job Mukkada is a singer-songwriter in his own right, but staunchly avoids the limelight because of his citrus allergy."
Check out the video for their single: "Take Off Your Sunglasses".
Plus you can download "Take Off Your Sunglasses" for free!
String Quartets and such
I've been hooked on instrumental covers of music for a long time. And highest on the list of musicians in that field is the Vitamin String Quartet who have carved a successful career out of hard rock and all kinds of different music, ranging from Lady Gaga to Coldplay to Rise Against.
You can catch a lot of their music on Youtube and I believe it's available on iTunes as well. Check out this song below where they have covered "Snow (Hey Oh)" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Awesome stuff.
Florence & the Machine Covers Bruce Springsteen
I am a HUGE fan of Florence & the Machine and I also love Bruce Springsteen and Kid Harpoon. So there is really one way to describe a Springsteen cover by Florence and Kid Harpoon: Magic.
The pair did a cover of the song I'm Going Down. If you're worried these artists have ruined Bruce, don't be. They respect the original while still putting themselves into it. Both of these artists have amazing voices and the power of their harmonies mixed with the simple acoustic guitar is perfection.
Check out a fan made video below or click here for the .mp3!
Silversun Pickups "Lazy Eye"
It seems I am developing somewhat of a theme each week - I keep discovering bands that are already "old news" to some - but like television re-runs, if you haven't seen it, it's "new to you!" I've been hearing a lot of buzz about Silversun Pickups for the last year or two, and upon finally hearing the music myself I can see what the buzz is about.
Silversun Pickups is a four piece, Grammy Award-nominated indie alternative rock band from LA. It's got a minimalist sound, with repeated chords. It's dense and layered, making heavy use of guitars for rhythms. It's all very trance-like without being electronica. It has emotive highs and lows, but it's not angry. There's distortion, but it's not dissonant. The whole song sounds like it's rolling, if that makes sense.
The band released their debut EP, Pikul, in July 2005, and their debut full-length album, Carnavas, on July 26, 2006. Their second full length album, Swoon, was released on April 14, 2009.
Check out this acoustic performance of "Lazy Eye" at KNDD in Seattle
I just canât get my mind off Lukas Nelson and the Promise of Real, a band that I saw at Farm Aid 25 a couple of weeks ago in Milwaukee.
Lukas is Willie Nelsonâs son..but he seems more like the descendant of Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Even if you have seen someone play with their teeth before, I think youâll be impressed! Heâs also got an old blues guy kind of voice which is strange coming out of someone so young.
He hasnât released an album yet, but you can find a bunch of live performances on youtube.
Radiohead "Creep" cover
I've always been pretty interested in movie soundtracks. The new movie, The Social Network (which is about the invention of Facebook) features music from Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) Atticus Ross. They did a great job with the music.
However, the song I'm hooked on is not used in the movie, but it was used in the trailer of the movie. It's a cover of Radiohead's Creep. It's performed by the Scala & Kolacny Brothers which is actually a Belgian girls choir. They've taken a lot of rock and roll songs and put their own spin on it.
Creep is already a creepy song, but it's brought to a new level with this version. (Careful, they do use the 'F' word a couple of times in the song).
Jonathan stole my thunder!
Ok, I saw "The Social Network" last week and I have to say it's one of the better movies I've seen in a while. One of the incredible parts of the movie is the soundtrack done by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who has been known for his combination on Hughes Brothers films).
The cool part of the soundtrack is this minimalist driving Philip Glass-like electronic rhythm mixed with the soft playing of a piano. You also have the frenetic voracity of Nine Inch Nails and some of the songs are very intense. I mean, covering "In the Hall of Mountain King" by Edward Grieg? Director David Fincher is a modern day Kubrick. Genius. Here's one of the best tracks "Intriguing Possibilities."
Generationals "Trust"
The Generationals released their debut album, Con Law, back in July of 2009 on Park the Van Records. However the song that caught my attention is off their upcoming EP Trust.
I heard the title track this past weekend and ever since it has been on repeat in my head and on my i-pod. It's a great indie pop track with heavy drums and a simple guitar melody. Its a light and catchy jangly tune and one that will have your head nodding.
You can stream the full track along with others by visiting Generational's Myspace!
Check out a video of Generationals performing These Habits and Trust
The Fruit Bats "When U Love Somebody"
My pick this week is what could be considered "an oldie but a goodie." The Fruit Bats' last release was in 2009 but I am just getting around to listening to the band now. The Fruit Bats have toured with the likes of Modest Mouse and The Shins but have never gained as much notoriety as many of their folk-rock counterparts.
The music is pretty easy listening, not too in-your-face and keeps the emotion positive. The song that I am listening to on repeat these days is the light + refreshing love song of sorts entitled "When U Love Somebody" from their 2003 release Mouthfuls. The band managed to take 4 simple lines and turn it into an incredible song.
I came across this fan music video - it's really well done!
This isn't your typical Fresh New Music blog post - but then again, this isn't your ordinary parody video.
Zooniversity is at it again - itâs #6 on YouTubeâs most watched music videos today! You may have heard their previously released Badger-centric tracks like âMy Biddyâ and âCoastie Song (Whatâs A Coastie?)â
Who is Zooniversity, you ask? After doing some investigation, we found a Twitter feed for the students behind this very creative + surprisingly well edited video. MCs Quincy Kwalae and Beef borrowed the beat from Cali Swag Districtâs âTeach Me How To Dougieâ and turned its minimalist stomp into âTeach Me How To Bucky.â The real treat is the cameos including Chancellor Biddy Martin, marching band director Mike Leckrone, orange piccolo guy, the statue from the Camp Randall Memorial Arch, and that brown party house outside of gate nine. Itâs pure gold. Or should I sayâ¦red + white.
You may call me old fashioned and behind the times, but I can't get enough of Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs" that was released in August. It's getting some radio play, but I like a lot of the songs that haven't been featured prominently.
Some people may argue that this isn't their best work, but I think it fits well with their other albums. Specifically, I love the haunting songs "Half Light I" and "Deep Blue." Here's the title track below:

Those Drums are Bangin'
I personally have a soft spot for Brooklyn bands. They always seem to be fresh and fun, if not a little weird. Ever since I got a hold of Brooklyn based The Drums self titled album I cant seem to stop playing it.
These guys put out a sound that is electro guitar pop with a hint of the beach boys and some 80's flair. Most of the tracks are songs have the brightest and most sunshiney melodies you'll hear, the only twist is the lyrics are those of a heartbroken and dejected man. A strange concept I know but they work like a great pick-me-up. My advice, if youve been in a recent breakup put on this record and you will be the happiest you've ever been...while feeling miserable.
-Intern Emily
Maximum Balloon
I am digging the new side project Maximum Balloon from TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, released September 21 on DGC/Interscope. I've been feeling a little retro lately and this album has just enough keyboard and funkiness to keep my ears happy for days.
Sometimes the sound is part-Talking Heads, while sometimes it's a little disco. The opening track "Groove Me" really sets it off - it's the kind of song you listen to before going on some sort of an epic adventure. Party on!
Ozzy has recorded his version of the song "How?" from John Lennon's 1971 "Imagine" album specially to salute John's 70th birthday. Osbourne rendition of this classic Lennon track from his 1971 'Imagine' album is available exclusively on iTunes with all proceeds benefiting Amnesty's human rights efforts around the globe. Download the Track Here and watch the video shot on location in New York City below.
From popeater.com: The recording is an extension of 'Instant Karma,' Amnesty's 2007 album of Lennon compositions from artists including U2, R.E.M., Christina Aguilera, Green Day and more all in the name of relief efforts in Darfur. But with a major Lennon birthday on the horizon, there was more to celebrate.
"This year the whole world is celebrating the 70th anniversary of John's birth," Yoko Ono tells Amnesty. "His spirit and influence is stronger than ever. John shared a common purpose with Amnesty International - shining a light on wrongs and campaigning to protect people's rights. We all shine on!"
Amnesty's USA's Executive Director Larry Cox says of Osbourne's effort, "Once again Yoko Ono has shared the extraordinary legacy of her husband's music to make a difference in the lives of those who have no voice. We continue to be enormously grateful to her for her support and generosity. Yoko and John Lennon were devoted to seeking a better world and used the power of their artistry to work toward that goal. Ozzy Osbourne's gift, with Sharon Osbourne's strong and generous support, makes the same powerful statement today: that individuals can make a difference when they join with others who share a commitment to justice and freedom."
Phoenix has released their entire 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix available for free download as complete multitracks, i.e. each individual track (guitar, drums, bass, etc.) and fans would be able to remix the songs.  Click here to go to the site to download the album.
The band wrote on it's website that they are getting ready for the end of their current tour and thanked fans saying, "You've made every moment since the release superbe [sic] and we want to thank you with a few presents before our last show in the U.S.. We hope you enjoy it."

John Lennon's Toilet Auctions for $15KA toilet that was formerly in the home of music legend John Lennon was sold at auction for $14,740, ten times the expected sale amount. The story behind the toilet is that it was in John Lennon's Berkshire, England home until he had the toilet removed and replaced. The bathroom renovator stored the toilet in his shed for the past 40 years. The organizer of the Beatles memorabilia auction, Anne-Marie Trace of The Beatles Store in Liverpool, stated that the toilet was "the most unusual item we've ever had in our auction." I would hope so... more infoNew Bruce Springsteen Set Out in Novemeber

Only days after singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens released his All Delighted People EP, the mysterious musician announced that he will be releasing a new album on October 12. The new release will be released on Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty Records and will be titled The Age of Adz (pronounced 'odds.') The album is inspired by the art of schizophrenic artist Royal Robertson. Robertson illustrated space aliens, monsters, futuristic automobiles and signs of the "Last Judgment" on poster boards. It should not really surprise anyone that Sufjan would announce an album release only weeks prior to the release date after years of no new material. Leave it up to Stevens to release an album inspired by an obscure artist that features heavy electronic use as well as heavy orchestration. more infoArcade Fire Create New Interactive Video with Google Maps

Check out these four free track downloads from some fantastic artists!
Arcade Fire are an indie rock group from Montreal fronted by husband and wife duo Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The band released a new album titled The Suburbs this week which features the track "Rococo."
Beck is an American songwriter and musician who has released a dozen studio albums over the last 2 decades. The song "Summertime" is featured on the soundtrack for the new film "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World."
Local Natives are a young band originally from Southern California. The band's 2009 release Gorilla Manor has been praised by many critics throughout the year. The track is a live version of a track off Gorilla Manor.
This track from Athens, GA rockers R.E.M. was originally on their 1985 release Fables of Reconstruction. If you like the sound of the above track, a remastered re-issue of the 1985 album was recently released.
New Jersey natives, The Gaslight Anthem released their third studio album, American Slang, on June 15. Despite the buzz throughout the "blogosphere," I was reluctant to climb on board the bandwagon. I had no experience with their previous music and was only familiar with the band through a couple of magazine and blog articles. Through this early research, my understanding of the band was they are considered "punk" and that there were Bruce Springsteen comparisons. I was slightly confused and struggled to connect the dots of a fairly new and young "punk" band and The Boss. But, finally after a month, I got my hands on a copy and gave the record a listen.
What I surprisingly found was a connection of the dots that was partnered with a refreshing sound. Somehow, throughout American Slang sound elements of both "punk" and Springsteen are present and working. I don't know if a self fulfilling prophecy based on my prior reading, but lead singer Brian Fallon's voice sounds as if Bruce Springsteen took a punk route. Maybe it is just a New Jersey thing. But, to clarify, the sound of The Gaslight Anthem floats somewhere between Bruce and Punk creating a great alternative rock sound.
The Gaslight Anthem have released two studio albums prior to American Slang: Sink or Swim in 2007 and The '59 Sound in 2008. American Slang has been greeted with great critical and sales acclaim, moving 27,000 copies in its first week while charting number one among independent releases and 16 on the Billboard 200.
Despite the album being only ten tracks and 34 minutes in length, it packs a catchy punch. On multiple occasions, I found myself listening to the entire album before I even realized it had finished. A good sign due to the lack of change track moments, but sad that the record finishes so quickly. Overall, the album is well done. A fun listen and recommended to anyone looking for a new alternative band to follow.
Check out and download The Gaslight Anthem's track "The Diamond Church Street Choir" off American Slang.

The Avett Brothers have released a brand new video for the track "Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise" from their most recent album I and Love and You. The track discusses the temporary nature of our buildings and the inevitable decay that comes with a temporary state of mind.
The new video for the song is a spectacular piece of work. Artist Jason Ryan Mitcham is behind the gorgeous painting animation. The video was created through the gradual alteration of one painting 2600 times over the course of the 4 minute and 20 second video. Ten painting alterations occur every second throughout the video.
The video not only looks amazing, but visually corresponds to the meaning of the song wonderfully. Watch this brand new exclusive video below!
The Avett Brothers have sold over 200,000 copies of their album I and Love and You since its late September release. The album has a cleaner sound than the rougher blue grassy sound of their earlier work. This is likely due to all-star producer Rick Rubin getting his fingerprints on the record. The Avett Brothers are planning to release a Live CD/DVD October 5 while they are still on the road promoting I and Love and You this summer.
Last year's Project M winner Mike Droho is asking for YOUR help! Mike Droho along with his band the Compass Rose are looking to continue their musical journey and are asking you to help them by donating to their cause.
Mike Droho & the Compass Rose are looking for donations to help the band purchase a new van to get the band across the country. The vehicle the band has used in the past has seen better days after the 600 shows and 100,000 plus miles traveled.
The band would love your financial help and in return you will be rewarded with some fantastic Mike Droho fan prizes. As Droho explains, "Your donations will not only help us live our dream, but they will also get you really cool one-of-kind merchandise, song recordings, linear note acknowledgments, admission to shows, and even live private performances! Please find it in your hearts to help us, the karmic universe will surely remember it."
So do a good deed and help these young musicians continue their musical adventure. Donations of any value will go a long ways in helping the band. There are only seven more days to reach around $1800 to help the band. If the financial goal is not reached, all "raised" money will go back to the donors. Head over to their Kickstarter page and show your love!

Rumors of a Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells) and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) collaboration have been surfacing for the past two years. The details of the album have been shrouded in mystery until recently when it was revealed the album will officially be released on July 13, 2010. After a long battle with record label EMI, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse will finally be able to share their beautiful work with the public.
There is a mysterious and slightly haunting feel to Dark Night of the Soul. This is caused by the actual sound of the record as well as the upsetting backstory of the album. Sadly, Mark Linkous, Dark Night of the Soul co-writer, committed suicide this past March, never getting the chance to see the project through to its release. Mark Linkous will truly be missed. Guest vocalist Vic Chesnutt also sadly took his own life last December and will be greatly missed in the music community as well. These tragedies put a shadow over the album, but within the mystery of the album there are hints of great joy.
After listening to Dark Night of the Soul a handful of times it is tough to put a finger on the emotion one should feel while listening. There is so much sad karma surrounding this album, yet Dark Night of the Soul is a delightful listen at moments. I almost feel guilty enjoying this album given the backstory.
It is difficult to put a genre or style to the music or even make comparisons to other artists or recordings due to the blend of styles on the album. Dark Night of the Soul contains a wide range of collaborating artists including The Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Iggy Pop, Frank Black of the Pixies as well as many others.
Track to track the album alters styles depending on the artist(s) who are featured on the given track. My three, although there are others, choice cuts from the album include the opening track "Revenge" featuring The Flaming Lips, "Star Eyes (I Can't Catch It)" featuring David Lynch, and "The Man Who Played God" featuring Suzanne Vega.
Filmmaker and visual artist David Lynch created a series of original photographs that go with Dark Night of the Soul that act as a visual dimension to the project. Be sure to pick up a copy of the album and the photographs that go with this spectacular project.
Although they are no longer with us, Linkous and Chesnutt have left us with a beautiful album to remember them by.
If you would like to listen to the album before you purchase, NPR is streaming the album in its entirety.

Paul McCartney rocked the Bay area Satuday night for the first time since The Beatles final public concert on August 29, 1966. McCartney played at the new baseball stadium AT&T Park next to Candlestick Park where The Beatles previously played. McCartey recalled the 1966 show saying, "We have great memories from playing here a long, long time ago. But we couldn't hear a damn thing from all the screaming girls." The developements of technology as well as the aging of the "girls" helped McCartney hear himself this time as he put on a great show for the McCartney faithful. To check out photos, the 38 song setlist, and other information about the show check here.

What has producer/artist Danger Mouse been up to lately? He's been recording under his real name Brian Burton with James Mercer, lead singer/ guitarist for the Shins. Meet The Broken Bells.Â
The pair met at at a music festival back in 2004 and discovered they were fans of one another's work. This lead to secret recording sessions in Danger Mouse's studios and the result? An album called The Broken Bells, which will be out March 9.
Until then, enjoy the first single off the album, The High Road.
The indie band One EskimO's ( yes, capital O) song Kandi is a very cool song, but it's origin is even cooler.
First we had Country/ Western star Patsy Cline and her song "Â He Called Me Baby", recorded just a few weeks before she died in a plane crash. Here's her song:
Several years later, 60's soul singer Candi Staton took Patsy's song and gave it her own spin.
Which brings us to One EskimO, who sample's Candi, pays tribute to her and names their song Kandi.

Lots of big name artists come together to form Seven Worlds Collide. Listen to full length tracks below.
7 years ago, Neil Finn & friends first got together to perform some live shows â and release a resulting live album. In December of 2008 and January 2009, Neil did it again, only this time bigger and better! He assembled a group of his friends and fellow artists in Auckland, New Zealand to record a brand new album of all new & original material.
The cast list this time includes Neil, Sharon & Liam Finn, Wilco, Johnny Marr, KT Tunstall, Ed OâBrien & Phil Selway of Radiohead, Lisa Germano, Bic Runga, and others â all contributing to the performances and songwriting.
About:
"I've never recorded an album in three weeks. But deadlines are a musician's best friend" - Neil Finn
Talk about piling on the pressure. There's a news crew in the studio where several well-known musicians - among them, Johnny Marr, Wilco, members of Radiohead and Lisa Germano - have just arrived after flying in from the other side of the world. And even though Christmas is a fine time to find yourself in New Zealand, that doesn't detract from the enormity of the task at hand. Or the onerous sense of responsibility that you, as the man who invited them over here, would feel about it all. Having come up with the idea, it would have been surely enough to send Crowded House frontman Neil Finn into a minor tailspin. Except that, as he explains, he had got all of that out the way before everyone started to arrive. "I started to panic about a month or two ago. I thought, 'What is this? Is this just an ego thing, to get all these people in and, you know, have a bit of a wank?'" But it was Neil's son Liam - now a formidable recording artist in his own right - who told him to calm down. "He said, 'But why wouldn't you?! If you could, why wouldn't you do something like this?' And I thought, yes - that's a good enough answer. If you get some musicians that you really admire and you know they're good people, and their families are cool as well, why wouldn't you get them out for a Christmas holiday and hang out and have some fun?"
"The pressure and panic. It brings out the best and the worst in you." - Johnny Marr
We have, of course, been here before. Seven years had elapsed since the first 7 Worlds Collide project saw Neil gather together a stellar bill of musicians - many of whom came again for this project - to play a series of shows in New Zealand. All proceeds from the resulting album and DVD went to international medical humanitarian organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres. This time around, with international development organisation Oxfam chosen as the beneficiaries, it was a significantly different 7 Worlds Collide project that Neil decided to reconvene. The creative stakes would be raised. This would be a studio collaboration of original songs. "Come with a song loosely prepared," Neil remembers telling incoming musicians - a claim that elicits a benign scoff of derision from producer Jim Scott, "Sure," he laughs, "they were coming with [songs]. They just hadn't been written yet!"
"Then, he came up with this killer chorus riff. I thought, this is already fun. I think it's going to be a great record too." - KT Tunstall
If the worst came to the worst, they could write it off as a holiday. Neil stipulated that families were more than welcome. "It was important that anyone's kids could feel able to walk through the door when a recording session was happening and it would be fine." says Neil - a good job, where Ed O'Brien was concerned. The Radiohead guitarist found that his kids were insatiably fascinated by the studio environment. But, for creative inspiration, the dramatic coastal location of the nearby beach at Piha began to work its own magic. On Christmas Eve, Johnny Marr embarked on one of his daily runs. By the time he returned, he had the basis of Too Blue. With the help of Jeff Tweedy - who also brought What Could Have Been and You Never Know to the project - the resulting song aced the combination of awe and vulnerability that the New Zealand landscape has, for so long, teased out of Neil and Tim Finn. Slowly but surely, Neil's conviction that the surroundings would bring out the best in all those involved was reaping unforeseeable dividends. Ed O'Brien fashioned the ascending, irresistible grandeur of Bodhisattva Blues - complete with crashing Ringo-esque drums from Elroy Finn - from a Tibetan chant. The Mutton Birds' Don McGlashan delivered two of the album's absolute standouts with Long Time Gone and a tender rite-of-passage meditation called Girl, Make Your Own Mind Up.
"The music that comes out of this place, it's relaxed, it's joyous. But there's also a dark undercurrent. Like New Zealanders, there's a heart of darkness to this place." - Ed O'Brien
As a relative newcomer to the project, KT Tunstall had good reason to be nervous. Suggested to Neil by Wilco's Glenn Kotche, KT and her husband Luke were honeymooning in New Zealand when they received the call. Once their camper van huffed and puffed its way to what the singer describes as a "windy clifftop road, a little too redolent of I Know What You Did Last Summer", KT hot-footed it to the studio, keen to allay her anxieties by getting a song under her belt. Late at night, she purloined her exhausted host to help her complete Hazel Black, but Neil Finn just wanted to go to bed. "I'd had a bit to drink and I said, 'KT, I don't think I've got it in me.' But she has this astonishing energy about her. Before we knew it, we had a song." If KT - who also penned a superb murder ballad Black Silk Ribbon with New Zealand musical icon Bic Runga - talks about the sessions with the saucer-eyed disbelief more common to a competition winner, it's hardly surprising. "Everywhere you looked, someone whose records had soundtracked your life was working on something that sounded incredible." Amid this atmosphere of musical cross-fertilisation, all sorts of ad hoc alliances resulted in inspired new songs. Getting to work on a rhythm track and melody laid down by Liam Finn, Johnny Marr wandered by and added a guitar track. This in turn suggested a new chorus melody to Liam that he then stayed up all night to finish. By the time Johnny checked back in, the hauntingly restive ruminations of Red Wine Bottle were complete.
"Phil Selway! It's the 'Who knew?' to end all 'Who knews?'!" - KT Tunstall
Within the bigger story of 7 Worlds Collide unfolded smaller narratives, many of them quite unexpected. Encouraged by Jim Scott to step out of the shadows (or, to be specific, the shop downstairs where she designs, makes and sells chandeliers) Neil's wife Sharon brought her crisp, dewy vocals to bear on a tune she wrote with her husband, Little By Little - no mean feat for a debutante when you considered the assembled talent watching her.
No less startling was the musical evolution of Radiohead drummer Phil Selway. Flying from England seven years ago for the first 7 Worlds Collide project, Selway remembered a feeling of terror descending upon him as he realised that Radiohead were the only band with whom he had drummed. Unbenownst to many of those present, Phil had learned his way around the guitar and found his own songwriting voice. But if such a relative novice was cowed by the presence of Neil and Johnny Marr - artists whose music he had listened to as a teenager - it didn't show. 7 Worlds Collide marks Selway's recording debut as a solo songwriting entity. Neil remembers: "Early on in the sessions I remember him going off to a quiet corner, the stairs outside the studio, and writing The Ties That Bind Us there and then - which, quite frankly, I would have struggled to do. When he came back, he sang it - and musically and lyrically, there was nothing wrong with it." KT Tunstall echoes Neil's astonishment: "It didn't just end there. He recorded it and - I kid you not - he was pitch-perfect. And this from a guy none of us had heard sing before."
"What do I bring to it? God, I don't know. Have you asked someone else?" - Neil Finn
"It's Neil. It all comes from him. He's just a big love explosion," says KT Tunstall, when pressed on the qualities Neil Finn brought to bear on the sessions. "There's something about him that made everyone open up creatively - which was vital to it." Wilco's Jeff Tweedy echoes the sentiment, pointing out that he has "listened to songs that Neil has sung or played on since I was in high school." Neil Finn simply recalls that when the three weeks were up, no-one wanted to go home. But inevitably the gravitational pull of real life (and the unbendable schedules that fill it) meant that, one by one, this ad hoc agglomeration of musicians - a merry mass that only self-deprecation mitigated against calling itself a supergroup - had to go home.
The lingering testament to their efforts is The Sun Came Out. Named after a line in the massed-ranks Kiwi chorus of Lisa Germano's Reptile, this two-CD collection is - like all the best studio albums - unified by a common mood, a shared aim and a belief that nothing redeems the soul and swells the spirit like a killer tune. It also happens to be a benefit record. But let's not make any special allowances here. This album's beneficiaries are not just the ultimate recipients of its proceeds, but anyone still capable of feeling that holy shiver of recognition when they hear a great pop song for the first time.
Let's face it. I like the cute young boys, particularly the ones who make good music. It's always a thrill to discover a new artist who bursts on the scene with great potential.

Meet Jer Coons, a 20 year old who MIGHT have been on American Idol if he hadn't slept through the auditions. Now, since his bio also says he was raised by a family of marsupials until he was 6, I think we need to take that  American Idol comment with a grain of salt.
He's been compared to lots of artists like Howie Day jack Johnson and Jason Mraz and has some pretty funny comments about the comparisons on his website: click here
However...the kid's music speaks for itself. His debut album " Speak" is out and is full of catchy songs that sound familiar the first time you hear them.
Decide for youself with this video of his single " Legs".
