This past weekend I went to see musician James Taylor perform at the Ravinia Festival in the suburbs of Chicago. I’ve been going to James Taylor concerts since I was in high school. I’ve probably seen him 18 to 20 times.
One of the things I always find inspiring about Taylor is his consistency. In fact, his voice seems to be getting better with age. Every time I see him, he sings songs like it’s the first time he’s playing them. The classic example is Fire and Rain. The song is more than 40 years old and I can’t imagine how many times he’s performed it. Every time I hear it, it sounds as if he’s truly putting his heart and soul into the song. I don’t know if he really enjoys singing it or can’t stand it. It doesn’t matter, the point is he delivers.
Some days I don’t feel like going to work and I’m sure you feel the same. I always get a little inspiration thinking of Taylor singing the same songs over and over again and doing it with such passion. If he can do his job so well, so can I.
