Driven to distraction

eatingA new national study shows that 25 percent of car accidents were caused because the driver was distracted (and cell phones were high up on the list). Apparently this was very controversial because the government didn't want to release the report because it might make Congress mad. What?! This statistic doesn't seem very surprising to me, and I don't know who it could possibly anger. I bet the percentage is actually higher, but a lot of people don't want to admit things like "I was picking lint out of my belly button," or "I was finishing up my algebra homework when this tree popped up out of nowhere." Now I just found another interesting list. Insurance.com tells us the top foods to avoid eating while driving. 1. Coffee - Even with a travel lid, hot coffee can find its way out of the opening when hitting a bump 2. Hot soup - Many people drink it like coffee and run similar risks. 3. Tacos – They can disassemble and leave a car’s interior looking like a salad bar. 4. Chili dogs – They provide huge potential for drips and slops down clothing. 5. Hamburgers – The grease and the toppings could end up on hands and clothing. 6. Ribs and wings – They are beyond greasy and lead to the temptation to lick fingers, taking hands off the wheel. 7. Fried chicken - Can result in greasy hands. 8. Jelly donuts – High risk of the jelly oozing out. 9. Soda - Fizz in the nose, and lids can leak. 10. Chocolate - If melted on the hands it can make the steering wheel slippery. -- I think that list is very alarmist. I have had very little trouble drinking soda while driving, and I admit I've tried most of those on the above list with no problem. Two others they don't mention--pizza, and oatmeal. I must be very talented because I've eaten both while driving and neither of those caused a crash.  But I'm not going to mention the assortment of stains I've gotten on my clothes and car seats in the process.
