Butch Vig and Steve Marker met back in the 70's while they were both attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Both had a love of music and played in college rock bands while also honing their skills as producers and engineers in Steve's basement. Eventually the two moved out of the basement and set up their very own studio, they named Smart Studios, on East Washington Ave.
This place has been the setting for recordings, mixes and remixes of some of the greatest bands in modern music history. The list reads like a who's who in music: Nirvana, Fall Out Boy, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Death Cab for Cutie, Beck, L7, Sparklehorse, Everclear, Freedy Johnston, Poster Children and Son Volt all have history at Smart Studios. Unfortunately the studio had to close its door this past May due to the down turn in the music industry.
In order to commemorate the building's rich history Wendy Schneider is making a documentary. Wendy is currently in the production stage for the film but has dont about 70 internviews and is taking submissions to add. While the completed movie is still a ways away (possibly a year) I am very excited about this project and cant wait to see how it turns out!
