Documentary paying tribute to Smart Studios

Butch Vig and Steve Marker met back in the 70's while they were both attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Both had a love of music and played in college rock bands while also honing their skills as producers and engineers in Steve's basement.  Eventually the two moved out of the basement and set up their very own studio, they named Smart Studios, on East Washington Ave.  This place has been the setting for recordings, mixes and remixes of some of the greatest bands in modern music history.  The list reads like a who's who in music: Nirvana, Fall Out Boy, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Death Cab for Cutie, Beck, L7, Sparklehorse, Everclear, Freedy Johnston, Poster Children and Son Volt all have history at Smart Studios.  Unfortunately the studio had to close its door this past May due to the down turn in the music industry.  In order to commemorate the building's rich history Wendy Schneider is making a documentary.  Wendy is currently in the production stage for the film but has dont about 70 internviews and is taking submissions to add.  While the completed movie is still a ways away (possibly a year) I am very excited about this project and cant wait to see how it turns out!  Check out the facebook fan page here for more info and instructions to submit material.

The problem with holiday sweaters--and it's not that they're ugly
Holiday sweaters--oh we love to mock them! Ugly holiday sweater parties have become so mainstream that I feel they are no longer ironic. But that's not what I'm going to gripe about. My problem is that ugly holiday sweaters are now becoming...

1. U2- Songs of Innocence: One of my favorite English poets is, William Blake. Jim Morrison of the Doors was so inspired by Blake's poetry, he used one of Blake's lines, "the doors of perception," to name the Doors….the Doors! So, this U2 album,...

World's Worst iPod: Carl Douglas "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting"
It's hard to believe a novelty song like this went all the way up the charts to number one---but it did, and actually stayed there for two weeks! It seemed most everyone, excluding our meteorologist Brian Olson wanted to hear this song, which came...

10. George Ezra: Wanted On Voyage This 21 year old sings, writes all his own songs and plays guitar bass and keyboards. And his music is beautiful, haunting and old beyond his years. In addition to the hit "Budapest", I loved the haunting "Did you...

Jeff the Promo Guy's Top 2014 Picks
2014 had a ton of great new album releases, and I easily came up with more than 10 to reference. I would have loved to include The Fray, Angus & Julia Stone, Bleachers, Alt-J, and George Ezra… but they just didn't make it on my Top 10 list. Here...
