This year's lineup for Lollapalooza! Just announced: the Black Keys, Black Sabbath, Jack White, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are headlining this huge music festival coming up August 3-5 at Grant Park in Chicago.
Also on the schedule: Florence and the Machine, The Shins, The Head and the Heart, fun., Alabama Shakes, and a band I'd love to see--TheNewNo2, featuring George Harrison's son Dhani.
I noticed an interesting trend at this year's fest--lots of bands named after animals, including Dr. Dog, Trampled By Turtles, The White Panda, Bears in Heaven, Yellow Ostrich, the Sheepdogs, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. In fact, the entire Animal Kingdom will be there. (Yep, there's a band called Animal Kingdom).
A roots revival is sweeping the country. Bands like Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers, and The Head and the Heart are taking traditional folk and Americana sounds and mixing them with modern elements to reach a new generation of audience. Hoping to make their mark on this new landscape are folk trio The Lumineers.
The Lumineers began in the suburbs of New York City. After the death of band member Josh Fraites' brother, he and friend Wesley Schultz found solace in music. They wrote music and performed gigs around New York City before packing their things and moving to Denver, CO with renewed hopes of success. There, they added cellist Neyla Pekarek, who would later expand her repertoire to piano and mandolin. Now a trio, the band cleaned up their sound and found a personal mix of acoustic folk, rock, and classic pop elements.
With the release of their first self-titled album coming Wednesday, April 3, The Lumineers have taken their show on the road. They will be stopping Madison to play The Frequency on April 12 at 9:00. Tickets are on sale for $8. They will also be stopping in Studio M earlier that afternoon to play a live, intimate session and you would be in the audience! Stop by the Triple M contest page and enter to win!
Majestic Theatre employees most likely breathed a collective sigh of relief last Thursday as William Fitzsimmons took the stage. After GWAR on Monday and Diplo on Tuesday, Fitzsimmons' subdued, low-key brand of music is just what was needed to recover.
William Fitzsimmons is a soft spoken singer/songwriter originally from Pittsburgh, PA. With 5 studio albums, his quiet, contemplative, and wrenching music has won multiple awards, been featured on numerous television shows, and garnered comparisons to Iron & Wine, Sujfan Stevens, and Elliot Smith. He, along with guitarist Jake Phillips and producer Josh Taylor, stopped in Madison to play an intimate seated show filled with songs spanning his career.
As Fitzsimmons played, his soft vocals hushed the crowd as we at times strained to hear him. The show was quiet, but I can't imagine it being any other way. In between songs, Fitzsimmons would briefly speak, poking fun at himself and the tone of his music. "We're going to slow things down a bit now," he said following likely the slowest, most gloomy song in the set. The humor was defiantly a relief.
Denison Witmer, who opened for Fitzsimmons, joined the others on stage for what was the highlight of the show. The four gathered around one microphone and played a cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold". To finish, Fitzsimmons pulled out a Banjolele to play "You Still Hurt Me", and then went off-mic to sing his last song "If You Would Come Back Home."
In the end, it was a great show. The Majestic Theatre made a perfect sitting for such a relaxing an intimate experience.
I'm not sure why Pete Yorn decided to name his new music project after a European cave dwelling aquatic salamander, but if he stops by to play us some songs in Studio M, we'll have to ask him.

Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons.
1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels.
2) I used to...
Hello to all from Nfusion. Another round of challenges has moved beyond us all. Congrats to those of us lucky enough to have survived to this point. Sad to see the others eliminated as they were all very creative and talented. Good Bye to our new friends...
This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
