Mark Olson w/ Cory Chisel7pm, Wednesday, September 15High Noon Saloon, tickets, more infoArriving this week at the High Noon Saloon in downtown Madison is none other than Mark Olson, founder of alternative country band The Jayhawks. Olson is riding the release of his second solo album titled Many Colored Kite from early this summer.
Mark Olson was an establishing member of The Jayhawks, taking on much of the songwriting and singing tasks for the Americana-country rockers. Along with Olson, The Jayhawks included Gary Louris, Marc Perlman on bass and Thad Spencer on drums. Olson left The Jayhawks in 1995 after 4 studio albums to pursue a new musical direction. Olson formed The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers with the help of his (at the time) wife Victoria Williams and the multi-talented Mike Russell. From 1997 to 2004 The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers recorded 7 albums before Olson and Williams separated in 2005.
Olson again to try a new direction musically, opting for a solo career with some collaboration with former Jayhawk Gary Louris. Recently Olson released a solo album titled The Salvation Blues in 2007, a collaboration album with Gary Louris titled Ready For The Flood in 2008 and most recently, Olson's earlier noted 2010 album Many Colored Kite.
Whether you have been following Olson musically over the years or are a Jayhawks fan from back in the day, the High Noon Saloon is the place to be on Wednesday night. If you have not heard any of Olson's solo/recent work, here are some free .mp3 files to check out before the show.

Trevor Hallw/ Cas Haley8pm, Sunday September 12, 2010High Noon Saloon, tickets, more infoThis weekend I went home to the Twin Cities to see family and celebrate Labor Day weekend away from all sources of "labor." While I was driving with my Dad we listened to a public radio special on The Beatles' 1966 classic album Revolver. My Dad made a comment about the use of the sitar on the track "Love You To" and how the use of that sort of instrument was never used on a pop album before that. We both laughed at the fact that even today the use of sitar is far from common.
As I drove back to Madison along I-94 with anticipation for this Sunday's Trevor Hall show I listened to Mr. Hall's most recent self-titled studio album. Although I have heard the album a number of times, the presence of a sitar on the very first track made me smile.
Trevor Hall is a singer and songwriter originally from Hilton Head, South Carolina. He has been fully absorbed with music since the age of 14 when he first was exposed to his father's drum kit. Hall soon recorded some of his own music and later attended Idyllwild Arts Academy in California to develop his musical talent in high school. He has recorded a number of releases including his 2006 EP The Rascals Have Returned, his 2009 full length self-titled album and a live album titled Chasing The Flame in 2010. Trevor's song "Other Ways" was featured on the soundtrack of Shrek the Third.
Hall's musical style has a hybrid reggae and pop feel. His voice has a distinct and bold sound to it. Hall has an accent while singing that is tough to describe, but beautiful when heard. His music is crisp and is filled with messages of peace and unity. From both a musical perspective as well as the message perspective, everyone could use some Trevor Hall.
The opening lines of Trevor's song "Where's The Love" are a perfect example of the message of love that Hall is working to spread.
"So many gods but no love for the peopleMy Mama told me that we are all made equalWhat are we fighting for?Why are we still at war?Where's the love? Where's the love?"
If I remember correctly, a band back in 1967 worked to spread this same message. The same band that rocked the sitar...
"All you need is love." -The Beatles
Be sure to head to the High Noon Saloon on Sunday to catch Trevor Hall with guest Cas Haley. You will not want to miss this young musician as he arrives in beautiful Madison, WI.

By now, Kenny Rogers has become such an icon that it's easy to forget how he got there. The songs on 42 Ultimate Hits, bringing together the top songs of his career from the late 60s First Edition years up to his current return to the charts, offers a crash-course reminder that Rogers is a star because he excels at his craft. Just look at the titles: "Lady," "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town," "The Gambler," "She Believes in Me," "Islands in the Stream," "We've Got Tonight," "Buy Me A Rose." Not a ditty among them. Then listen. The sweetly raspy vocals are instantly identifiable as Kenny Rogers - he sounds like nobody else. It's about time Farm Aid makes it to the Dairy State!
Having had the chance to attend one previous Farm Aid, I was ecstatic to hear that the 25th anniversary benefit concert is happening at Miller Park in Milwaukee October 2nd. Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews are all scheduled to perform, and more artists will be announced later.
Farm Aid founders Nelson and Mellencamp made the announcement via webcast on Monday, and despite some technical glitches managed to get the information out.
Mellencamp says Milwaukee is a perfect place to celebrate Farm Aidâs silver anniversary, noting that âMidwest farmers share the same struggle as family farmers across the country. They are survivors, and theyâre on the land creating solutions for Americaâs most pressing issues.â
According to a news release, the all-day festival will be a celebration of music, family farmers and good food and will again feature HOMEGROWN concessionsâfamily-farm identified, local and organic foods. Farm Aidâs HOMEGROWN Village will showcase hands-on activities that give concertgoers a chance to meet farmers, get their hands dirty, and learn how family farmers are protecting our land and water and connecting us to our roots.
I got to attend Farm Aid in 1998 in Chicago, and it was a blast. Not only did I get to see the main headliners (minus Dave Matthews who hadn't joined the team yet), I got to see Wilco, Brian Wilson, Steve Earle with the Del McCoury Band and even Hootie and the Blowfish. I have to say I was extremely blown away by Phish..who were joined on stage by Neil Young for a marathon guitar duel during "Down By The River." Even though I don't know the complete lineup for the 2010 edition, I'm going to do everything I can to be there.
Tickets for Farm Aid 25: Growing Hope for America will go on sale Saturday, August 14, at 9 a.m. CDT and are available at the Brewers box office, by phone at (414) 902-4000 or online at www.tickets.com. Ticket prices range from $39.50 to $97.50, including facility fee.Farm Aid will offer special advance sale tickets to Farm Aid members beginning Friday, August 6. To become a Farm Aid member, click here. (Cost is $40 per membership and the availability of advance tickets is not guaranteed).
UPDATE 8/2/10: The concert has been confirmed!
As Mr. Willie Nelson's website explains, there has been a "Willie-leak." Earlier today Willie Nelson had a slip of the tongue while on The Bill Mack Show on XM radio (Willie's Place is Willie's XM channel) when he revealed that the location for Farm Aid 25 will be Milwaukee, WI. The date of Farm Aid is reportedly October 2, 2010, but few details beside a date have been revealed. More details will be officially released Monday August 2, 2010.
Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the original Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the decline of family farms. Farm Aid was established to prevent family farms from losing their land while providing financial aid to local farmers. Last year Farm Aid was held in St. Louis, Missouri and featured a great lineup of artists including Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Dave Matthews Band, Wilco and many more. For more information about Farm Aid musicians and other general inquiries, head over to the Farm Aid site and check it out.
As more details about this amazing event are released, Triple M will make sure you are informed. Until then, check out Willie and Neil rocking Farm Aid 2009!
John Eddie with The Rowdy Prairie DogsSaturday July 31, 9pm, 21+High Noon Saloon, more info
American folk-rock singer John Eddie will be taking the stage Saturday night at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI. Eddie is a skilled guitarist and songwriter who has plays rock 'n' roll with folk country influences. Originally from Virginia, Eddie moved to New Jersey to progress his music career in the 1970s where he became friends with Bruce Springsteen and signed with a major record label. Many critics compared the young John Eddie to Bruce Springsteen, but the comparisons fell short due to Eddie's country music inspired sound.

Todd Snider is an Americana/alternative country singer-songwriter originally from beautiful Portland, Oregon. Too Snider has been recording and releasing music since 1994 when he released his first album Songs for the Daily Planet. Snider has released more than ten albums over the past 16 years including his highly regarded 2006 release The Devil You Know. The Devil You Know was included in many best of 2006 lists, ranking as high as 14 by Blender Magazine.
Todd Snider blends a "folky" acoustic guitar with a sometimes sang and other times talked lyric delivery. Songs such as "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" and "Alright Guy" are lyrically simple to understand while delightfully entertaining. Snider intermixes hilarious stories into his sets as if he is part musician and part stand up comic. His sound as well as his comedic style make Todd Snider resemble a young Loudon Wainwright.
Opening for Todd Snider is young singer-songwriter Samantha Crain. Originally from Shawnee, Oklahoma, Crain is an alternative/indie guitar player and singer. She has released two studio recordings, The Confiscation EP in 2007, and more recently her first album Songs in the Night in April of 2009.

This Friday evening, Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons will be rocking the stage overlooking Lake Mendota with Project M's very own Jimmie Linville and his band Daniel and the Lion.
You may remember Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons from the 2009 Madison Roots Festival. They are an Americana/folk rock band led by the one and only Cory Chisel. Cory Chisel grew up in Appleton, WI and developed his musical taste and abilities while playing music with family members from a young age along with an exposure to church gospel music. His large family is filled with guitar players who over time taught him the tricks of the trade as well as expose the young musician to artists such as Sam Cooke, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan and others. Chisel and the Wandering Sons have released a few discs including their 2009 album Death Won't Send A Letter. Head over to Chisel's site for all the information and streaming tracks you could ask for!
Opening for Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons is Baraboo based Daniel and the Lion. Daniel and the Lion is a folk/rock/pop band that features Project M's most recent champion Jimmie Linville! If you are a Project M follower you already know how talented Jimmie Linville is. Jimmie's band Daniel and the Lion fully showcases his singing and songwriting skill as well as the rest of the band's great musical talent. Daniel and the Lion list their influences as including Counting Crows, Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Wisconsin's own Bon Iver. If you tossed all these artists and the state of Wisconsin in a blender, the amalgamation would be the graceful yet powerful sound of Daniel and the Lion. Check out a couple of streaming tracks as well as snag yourself a copy of their This is Homemade EP and/or other goodies by heading to Daniel and the Lion's website.
This is an evening of music you really should not miss. Whether you are a Project M fan who can't get enough Jimmie Linville, a Wisconsin homegrown music junkie, or just a fan of fantastic music, Saturday night at the Terrace is for you! Head to the Terrace and show some love for some of Wisconsin's most promising musicians this Saturday!

7/14 Liars w/ John Wiese
High Noon Saloon, 9pm, 18+, more info
Indie Rock
Liars write music that is surprisingly formulated after the beats are laid down on the drum machine -- exhibiting fundamental elements of punk rock. Synthetic keypads, vocal modulation, and interspersed prearranged compositions, mixed with their guitar-bass-drums equation, create angular yet melodic songs. Liars are reminiscent of U.K. groups that embraced dance music during the late '70s/early '80s (A Certain Ratio, Gang of Four, the Slits) -- bands that are all known for insidiously adding danceable rhythms to punk. For tickets, head over to True Endeavors!

7/17 Southern Culture on the Skids
High Noon Saloon, 10pm, 21+, more info
Alternative Rock
True to their name, North Carolina's Southern Culture on the Skids offers an affectionate parody of local white-trash trailer-park culture, matching their skewed outlook with a wild, careening brand of rock & roll. SCOTS' music is a quintessentially Southern-fried amalgam of rockabilly, boogie, country, blues, swamp pop, and chitlin circuit R&B, plus a liberal dose of California surf guitar, a hint of punk attitude, and the occasional mariachi horns. Following an early incarnation as a relatively straightforward roots rock outfit, they morphed into a raucous, sleazy, tongue-in-cheek party band obsessed with sex and food; in fact, fried chicken became a crucial part of their live performances, whether it was used in eating contests or tossed into the audience. Southern Culture may play chiefly to an underground rock audience, but their gonzo tributes to the South aren't as smug as some of their peers working similar territory, since the band has genuine roots in the area. For tickets, head to True Endeavors!

7/7 One eskimO w/ Jeffery David
Majestic Theatre, 8pm, more info
Indie Pop Rock
The brainchild of singer/songwriter Kristian Leontiou, One eskimO arrives with an impressive breadth of imagination that instantly marks them as something extraordinary. The London-based bandâs Shangri-La Music self-titled debut is an ambitious and affecting collection of widescreen modern pop, alive with iridescent textures and intricately created songcraft. Songs like âHometimeâ and the buoyant âAll Balloonsâ are moving and expressive, touching upon such universal themes as love and heartbreak, success and failure. As if that werenât enough, the release comes in tandem with a full-length animated film. One eskimOâs unorthodox self-visualization only serves to add idiosyncratic color and character to a beguiling musical work already abounding with invention and emotion.
Check out the bluesy slide guitar and washboard of Boo Bradley. Consisting of Brad Selz and Scott Kiker, Boo Bradley has spent plenty of time all around Madison performing their gritty blues/rock for local fans.

6/28 Wayne "The Train" Hancock High Noon Saloon, 8pm, 21+, more info
Southern Rock
Since his stunning debut, Thunderstorms and Neon Signs in 1995, Wayne âThe Trainâ Hancock has been the undisputed king of Juke Joint Swing -- that alchemistâs dream of honky-tonk, western swing, blues, Texas rockabilly and big band. Always an anomaly among his country music peers, Wayneâs uncompromising interpretation of the music he loves is in fact what defines him: steeped in traditional but never "retro;" bare bones but bone shaking; hardcore but with a swing. Like the comfortable crackle of a Wurlitzer 45 jukebox, Wayne is the embodiment of genuine, house rocking, hillbilly boogie.

6/29 Paleo w/ Kenny Monroe and DovekinsProject Lodge, 7pm, more info
Indie
Songwriter David Andrew Strackany, a.k.a. Paleo, is best known for simply being prolific: He wrote and recorded 365 tracks between 2006 and 2007 for his project The Song Diary, then followed that up with the weekly Sunday Prayer series, amassing a giant list of MP3s on his website in the process. But on many of his scraggly solo-acoustic tracks, Strackany can at least create the illusion that the material's been gestating for more than a few days. He usually tours just as fast as he writes, and live, he can cast a spell of silence that chases off any notes of gimmickry.
6/30 Black Mountain w/ David Vandervelde
High Noon Saloon, 9pm, more info
Indie Psych Rock
Black Mountainâs self-titled 2005 debut heaved with thick, druggy dirges and Sabbath-laden riffsâso much so that the Vancouver group seemed poised to charge Queens Of The Stone Ageâs stoner-rock castle, unkempt beards flapping wildly in the wind. Followed by 2008âs In The Future, the highly touted release maintained Black Mountainâs psychedelic meanderings and throbbing, old-fashioned riff-rock. The bandâmore of a collective reallyâthen went into hibernation as its members branched out to similarly minded (and usually overlapping) side projects as Pink Mountaintops and Lightning Dust. Returning this year to Black Mountain, the quintet already has a full-length in tow: The new Wilderness Heart is slated for release this September. For more info and tickets visit True Endeavors.

7/1 Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo
The Brink Lounge, 8pm, more info
Blues Rock
Madison blues-rock trio Aaron Williams And The Hoodoo's 2009 album, It Ain't Easy, doesn't evoke any images of Williams suffering alone in a shack along the Mississippi, but rather of a funky roadhouse rave-up. Drummer Eric Shackleford's snappy snare and hi-hat help to give the band a streak of New Orleans funk, so there's more going on here than Williams' brightly amped guitar and thick-tongued baritone vocals. Hammond organ (courtesy of Williams' recently deceased father) goes well with the music's shiny finish, and "Hypnotize" starts the album off with a feisty pulse, thanks to its balance of slide-guitar riffs and syncopation. The Hoodoo doesn't have the Midwest's most subtle take on blues, but its best moments are pretty fun regardless.
7/2 The Caribbean w/ All Tiny Creatures and Jivas
Project Lodge, 8pm, more info
Indie Rock/Pop
Washington D.C. shape-shifters The Caribbean paddle in and out of waves of shuddering reverberation and guitar noise, resulting in a freeform fluidity that's comfortably based in pop. The ghostly, randomly appearing, distorted sound effects and refusal to adhere to conventional song structures make the bandâs music disorienting yet oddly inviting. Keeping the buoyant abstract expressionism effectively grounded is the constant nasal whine of singer Michael Kentoff, whose rambling narratives blanket 2007âs Populations in a more earthbound haze. When it occasionally concedes to traditional chorusesâalmost as a reward for patient listenersâThe Caribbean conjures up some of its strongest and most memorable moments, as on âThe Go From Tactical.â
7/3 Dave Matthews Band w/ The Zac Brown Band
Alpine Valley Music Theatre, 7pm, more info
Rock/Jam/Pop
The only thing more boring than Dave Matthewsâ music is alleged to be is the rationale by which such allegations are usually made. The archetypal Matthews critique usually includes one of the following: a snort about the folkways (not to mention the mere existence) of fraternities, mention of the weirdness of saxophones in pop music that skews young, and a swipe at something or other having to do with khaki pants. Only the middle one is reasonable as a critical metric, and Matthewsâ insistence on pairing saxophone with electrified violin introduces a whole other line of questioning worth following. The band's latest, called Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King, came out last year, and serves as a tribute to its late saxophonist LeRoi Moore.
7/3 Justin Townes Earle w/ Dawes and The NodMemorial Union Terrace, 9pm, more info
Blue Grass/Rock
Justin Townes Earle's taste for the reassuring corniness of old honky-tonk, bluegrass, and Western swing makes for some captivating deception. Still in his late 20s, Earle uses these velvety sounds to line warped caskets of song. Rather than pour all the hurt out there, Earle's mannered rasp and rosy melodies throw just enough light on things to provide a glimpse. "Poor Fool," from 2009's Midnight At The Movies, and the title track of his 2008 debut, The Good Life, both pull off the classic country trick of dousing tales of the pathetic in drunken charm. Opening here is the impossibly sunny roots-rock group Dawes, sounding straight out of another, much simpler era: Its naked sentiments are lovingly stitched into a tender quilt of patient piano chords, gentle and lush vocal harmonies, and floating acoustic-guitar chords.

Tomorrow evening is the finale for Project M, the singer-songwriter competition and reality show through Triple M. The Brink Lounge at 701 East Washington is the place to be tomorrow (Thursday 6/17) at 7pm. Project M began with 10 contestants and week by week has slowly dwindled down to the final three contestants. The final three include Keefe Klug, Anna Laube, and Jimmie Linville.
All three contestants will perform a thirty minute set with the big announcement to follow. Crowd response will be a factor in the decision, so make sure to make it to the Brink Lounge and show support for your favorite contestant. Past and present Project M contestants and judges will be in attendance.
The three contestants who remain have all displayed their songwriting skills throughout the competition and these talents will be on showcase tomorrow evening. If unfamiliar, or familiar and a fan, here is some information and free downloads from the three remaining contestants.
Keefe Klug is from Madison, WI and has been playing guitar since the age on 13. Keefe has a desire to win this competition because he wants to introduce the Madison area to his style of music while developing a strong relationship within the Madison music community. For more information on Keefe here is a link to his Project M page. Below is a free download of his track "Two Wrongs."
Anna Laube is also from Madison, WI and credits here great music upbringing to her parents as they played great music in the house throughout her childhood. She began playing piano at the age of three and continued to learn a whole arrangement of instruments as time went on. Anna wants to win because of her love for music and the fact that Triple M is a great radio station and she would love to hear Gabby put her music into regular rotation. For more information visit Anna's Project M page here and check out her free downloadable track below.
Jimmie Linville is from Baraboo, WI and has been playing songs for four years. Jimmie Linville influences include Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Ray LaMontagne and Sufjan Stevens. He wants to win Project M because the $500 gift card to Good 'n' Loud sounds perfect for a new PA for his band Daniel and the Lion while meeting and getting to know members within the Madison music scene. Here is a link to Jimmie's Project M page and below is a free download of his song "Tracing Circles."
Hello Triple M fans and listeners. Â My name is Sam Ryan and I am the digital content producer intern for Triple M radio here in Madison, WI. Â Through this position I have been extremely fortunate and have been given the opportunity to cover this weekends Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, TN.
The idea of going to Bonnaroo has been in the back of my mind for the past couple years, but has usually fallen short due to lack of time, money, or some other issue within members of a group. Â But finally I am able to go and I can't express my excitement for this experience enough.
To cover Bonnaroo I am bringing my good friend and recent UW graduate Justin Dean, known to most friends simply as Dean. Â Dean too has a love for music and it will be great being able to share music knowledge and experience with him and the other tens of thousands at Bonnaroo.
When I found out I would be heading to Tennessee as the representative for Triple M this year, I instantly went to the active forums of Inforoo and weeded through topics and finding good-to-know nuggets from experienced 'roo-ers. Â I have thrown together a list of items to bring that is very similar to other packing lists I have seen on the internet. Â Some of my note worthy must haves are a flagpole with "motion W" UW flag for flying high at our campsite and marking the great city of Madison's territory at the fest, a 30gb ipod loaded with strictly Bonnaroo performer music, instant coffee for the caffeine fix, and a selection of vintage NBA jerseys for the (cross my fingers) beautiful sunny days.
I have a tendency to try not to look at the projected weather for more than a couple days before an event, but yesterday I had to look at the ten day forecast for Manchester, TN. Â I will admit, my findings were not great. Â It looks like scattered thunderstorms are likely for my four days in Tennessee. Â Could be interesting, but as the Local Natives say, "Who knows, who cares." Â Regardless of weather, I am sure Bonnaroo 2010 will be an experience of a lifetime.
Moving on to the main purpose for a Bonnaroo weekend, the music!  The lineup for Bonnaroo is absolutely amazing.  For the first six or seven glances at the lineup I was still finding artists I did not see before.  The depth of the number of great artists is amazing as well as the large breadth of genres covered. The festival begins Thursday afternoon and caps off Sunday night as Dave Matthews wraps the festival up. As I look over the schedule here are my most anticipated sets for the weekend.

Have you heard the song "Rumble and Sway" yet on Triple M?
The singer sounds like a raspy blues dude who's definitely been around the block a few times....but surprisingly, Jamie N. Commons is only 23 years old!
He was born in England, but...
Last week, I decided I would try one new, healthy food a week, and asked my facebook friends to make some suggestions.
The first thing I tried was mango. I'm sure I've had other mango flavored things, and mango as part of something else, but...
There's only one thing that might be worse than the Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." And that's Jonathan Suttin doing his best crooning...doing both parts. Most unpleasant.
A lot of people liked this song...

This duet by Ol' Blue Eyes and his daughter went all the way to number 1 back in 1967. It seems a little creepy that Frank and Nancy Sinatra are singing a love song. However, a lot of Triple M listeners were in the mood for it.
