Kitty Dunn

What does Kitty have to say?

Big Event = Big Fun!

I had a great time at Middleton's Big Event over the weekend..managing to see 5 bands at 4 different venues! The day started off at the Club Tavern, where honky tonk singer Dale Watson and the Lone Star Band entertained a good sized crowd. If you've never heard of Dale, he's got a GREAT old-time country voice, and sings real country music. Not Shania Twain-Brooks and Dunn pop that masquerades as country. When he got up on stage he remarked "this is the first time I've seen all of you so SOBER!" It was a little strange seeing a honky tonk guy like Dale at 1:30 in the afternoon.   Early in his set, he said he needed a "little hair of the dog," but said "no shots." Some one brought up 4 or 5 different kinds of beer. He picked up the Schlitz, and remarked, "last time I had Schlitz I was broke!" (But he drank it!) After Dale' set, Mike and I scooted over to the Capital Brewery where John Eddie and his band played a short set "Live from Studio M" with Pat Gallagher hosting. We found out John should have a new album coming out later this year, and that Kid Rock's been very good to him. Kid Rock recorded John's song "Low Life " on his most recent album and it made John enough money to buy a house in Nashville! After John Eddie, Joel Pingatore and the Playground of Sound ripped it up..and then after a quick stop at home we headed over to the Bristol Boar where we heard a three-piece called "Rhythm and Blues Review." They played a lot of fun stuff including Prince and Michael Jackson, but my favorite was their cover of Wilco's "California Stars" done reggae style. Then we finished off the night at the Hody..which is a much more pleasant place now that it's smoke free. The cover band that was playing was called "Fuzzy Side Up," and they played all the usual songs that get folks out onto the dance floor, and did a fine job. Here's a video of Dale Watson, so you can get an idea what he's all about. The stage setup even looks a little like the one at the Club Tavern!

In 1968, Jeannie C. Riley topped both the pop and country charts with "Harper Valley PTA". She was the first female singer to accomplish that feat and it wasn't repeated until Dolly Parton did it in 1981 with the song "9 to 5". The song was...

Here To Help
One small detail I like about Bonnaroo ... the security people's shirts say "Safety" and "Here to help". They seem well-trained and they do the things security folk do ... but I like the emphasis on safety and that they're doing these things...
