Best Christmas Candy

We never had much candy around our house, unless it was the Christmas season. I think my parents went a little crazy stocking up on a variety of sweet treats...but I'm pretty sure my sweet toothed Dad was responsible for most of it.

Some of the popular stuff these days wasn't around when I was growing up..so there were no red & green holiday M&Ms or chocolate oranges.

These were some of the big ones at our house. Were any of these your favorites?  Did I miss something good?

CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW SANTAS: I always got at least one of these in a treat bag when I went to go see Santa Claus at the Knights of Columbus hall every year. I always wished they were more chocolate, less marshmallow.

And I always felt a little guilty biting the head off the jolly old elf.

PEANUT BRITTLE:  This stuff had to be good for you, with all that protein in those peanuts! I really liked the small pieces left at the bottom of the bowl.

And I was really happy when they came out with the Peanut Munch candy bar. Even though they had a few too many peanuts for my liking.

MERINGUE CANDY:  I think we had another name for this whipped concoction of egg whites and sugar.

Was it called divinity? Or maybe sea foam? I'm so confused.

ANGEL FOOD CANDY:  Not to be confused with devil's food cake, this yellowish candy covered with chocolate was always purchased at Fleet Farm in bulk.

If you buy candy from a place that also sells cattle prods and paint, it's got to be good.

CANDY CANES:  I'm not a huge fan of peppermint candy, so I always thought these made a better tree ornament than confection.

Probably because they took too long to eat and prevented me from shoving all those other goodies in!

World's Worst iPod: Kajagoogoo "Too Shy"
Gotta love the '80s! Depending on who you're talking to, Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" is either a song that defines the decade, in a good way, or it's a song that gives all other '80s songs a bad name. It made it to #5 on the charts in...

5 Things You Probably Didn't Know about Birthday Boy Neil Young
Happy 69th birthday to my favorite self-proclaimed "rich hippie," Neil Young. I remember when I was a kid, I hated Neil's voice. I didn't even particularly care for his songs CSNY albums, but the guy grew on me, and he's now one of my...

World's Worst iPod: Mac and Katie Kissoon "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep"
There was a lot of love this morning for a song that made it up to #20 in 1971 for the brother sister team of Mac and Katie Kissoon. The pair hailed from Trinidad and this was their only Top 40 hit.
