I've heard lots of people say "Halloween on State Street isn't what it used to be!" Actually I think it's a good thing. There's nothing wrong with the new Halloween on State. I think it's better.
I came to Madison as a freshman in 1986 and graduated in 1990. During that time Halloween was CROWDED, but calm. There were tons of people on the street. In fact, I remember being pushed along with the crowd because there were so many people. The only entertainment was looking at all the costumes. Granted that was fun, but it was always so crowded that it seemed a little scary. When Halloween turned into people smashing windows and acting like idiots that's when it became bad. Who needs a bunch of out-of-towners coming and trashing State Street?
On Saturday night, my gal Lindsay and I wandered around with Mayor Dave to check out all the action. It was crowded, there were tons of costumes, there was lots of entertainment and it was fun. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't feel like Halloween has been ruined. It's better. Orderly fun can still be fun. As you can see from the photo on the right, Mayor Dave really got into the spirit and wore a pretty good costume this year.
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture.
I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons.
1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels.
