A Phish Story

Everybody has a Phish story and I gave some stranger the story of his life. The vacation plans were to go home, visit family and attend the 40th Anniversary Woodstock concert. ( Which was AWESOME and I will post some pics and stuff later this week). About a month ago, I discovered Phish was holding their end of tour show at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, RIGHT WHERE I WAS GOING TO BE! I admit that I have connections, so I was able to purchase tickets at that late date thru my friends in the Phish organzation. I was over the moon  when they arrived and were for the 2nd row!! The show was scheduled to start at 7:30 and if you have ever attended a Phish show you know it never starts on time. We were about 2 hours away, and even with the major detour along the way, we managed to check into our hotel and head towards the venue with plenty of time to spare. About 3 miles away, we see signs that say the venue parking lots were all full.  Well, NOW where will we park? No one knew, and we inched ever closer to SPAC. So it's very hot and humid and it looks like it's gonna pour at any moment. Word gets to us that there is parking about 2 miles away. Hmmm.. 2 miles, hot and humid, rain on the way and I'm not a kid anymore, plus I saw a KICK BUTT show at Alpine Valley. Tim and I discuss for a minute, then decide to try and sell the tickets. He's pessimistic I won't be able to. HA! I open the window and hold the tickets out...within seconds several young men are at the window asking if they were in the pavilion. Dude, I tell him, they are in the 2nd row! He practically passes out from excitement. I sell them for exactly what I paid for them, turned around and headed back towards the hotel. Along the way, we stop and purchase an excellent Altec docking station for my Ipod and had enough money left over from the ticket sale to legally download the concert the next day. So, yes, I missed the show and missed getting drenched and crushed in the heat and humidity by thousands of overly excited young people, but ended up with the concert anyway, a great sound system and 3 strangers with the most amazing experience ever.

World's Worst iPod: Exile "Kiss You All Over"
Kitty thought this song was an example of country disco and was not a fan...but just about everybody else was. "Kiss You All Over" was #1 for four weeks in 1978, and was probably one of the year's best songs. Exile rocks out with the song here...

The next Jonny Lang? Quinn Sullivan is the real deal
I was up in Wausau for the Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, and had a great time watching all the great live music. The big surprise of the day was the guy who played at 3pm. He's just 15 years old and is a good friend of Buddy Guy, and even got to play...

World's Worst iPod: Young MC "Bust a Move"
Kitty apppeared to be all alone on her dislike of this song, which made it to #7 on the charts in 1989. Rolling Stone described the song this way: "a G-rated funk-bomb integral to hip-hop's eventual mainstream acceptance." The G-rating probably...

The most beautiful spot in Dane County right now
If you get a chance to head out to Pope Farm Conservancy in the next couple of days--I highly recommend it! Pope Farm Conservancy is 105 acres that sits on top of three recessional moraines in the Town of Middleton, where three different watersheds...

World's Worst iPod: Rex Smith "You Take My Breath Away"
Teen idol Rex Smith made it all the way up to #10 on the Billboard charts in 1979 with this song, which was actually featured in a TV movie called "Sooner or Later." Smith had a bit of an acting career and appeared in "Grease" and "Pirates of...

World's Worst iPod: Hall & Oates "Method of Modern Love"
Hall & Oates had a lot of great hits in the 1970s and 1980s, and if you believe a lot of folks, this is NOT one of them! This song with its amazing spelling lesson hook made it all the way to #5 on the charts in February of 1985. We're a...

Will this be Clapton's last record?
Eric Clapton definitely has retirement in mind. He hinted to Rolling Stone recently that he may quit touring and recording, and only play for family and friends. We can look forward to at least one more new Clapton record before he hangs up his Strat...
