[Shows this Week] Triple M Recommends for Sept. 27-Oct. 2

9/27 The Clyde Stubblefield Band The Frequency, 9:30pm, Ages 21+, $5, More info
Funk
Clyde Stubblefield worked with James Brown.  Enough said.  He plays at The Frequency, located one block from the Capitol at 121 West Main Street. The Clyde Stubblefield Bands plays every Monday night starting at 9:30pm and has been bringing the funk to Madison for over 20 years.
9/28 Ben Harper Library Mall of UW Campus, 3:30PM
Alternative rock/reggae
Ben Harper will be playing before President Obama's speech on Tuesday. Harper is one of the top guitarists around and he will definitely get the crowd going.  The only bad thing is there's not going to be any breathing room to enjoy the music because this is going to bring a lot of people.
9/28 The National Orpheum Theatre, 7:30pm, $26/$28, more info
Indie Rock
The National has been around since 1999 and has the unique baritone voice of Matt Berninger who has been leading a tremendous band.  Originally from Ohio, they are now based out of Brooklyn and are coming off the very successful High Violet album.  Join them at the Orpheum on Tuesday night.
9/28 Drive by Truckers with The Henry Clay People Majestic Theatre, 8:30pm, All Ages, $25/$45, more info
Alternative country/rock
Drive by Trucks will definitely take you out on an interesting date.  These southern rockers come from Georgia and Alabama and are the real deal.  They have been very productive recently with the album The Big To Do released in March and they have an upcoming album Go-Go Boots slated for near the end of this year.  If you feel like putting on your country gear and heading out, these guys would be a good show to see.
9/29 Blitzen Trapper High Noon Saloon, 8:30pm, 18+, $12/14, More Info
Indie Folk/Rock
Blitzen Trapper will be a great show to see because they have a host of good songs to hear.  High Noon Saloon is a great venue for these guys because it has the relaxed backdrop to just enjoy the music and forget about that damn TPS report you have due tomorrow.
9/30 The Boxer Rebellion and Grayshot The Annex, 9pm, 18+, $10 more info
Alternative Rock
This band formed in London and is centered around lead singer Nathan Nicholson.  The have released two studio albums Exits in 2005 and Union in 2009.  They are sure to put on an interesting show at The Annex, located at 1206 Regent Street.
10/01 Valient Thorr w/ Junius and Howl and The Antiprism The Frequency, 10pm, 21+, more info
Hard Rock
This band looks like they belong raiding some village in Europe.  And they look like they can rock your pants off.  They originate from North Carolina and have an almost funky rock sound that is intriguing and terrifying.  You probably will have trouble hearing what anybody says to you the next day because they will be loud.  Check 'em out and let us know what you think.
10/02 The Thermals w/ Cymbals eat Guitars and Sleeping in the Aviary The Annex, 9:30pm, 18+, more info
Pop/Rock/Punk
The Thermals have been around since 2002 and have been punking up the rock scene since starting in Portland, Oregon.  Their latest album Personal Life was released this month and has faced lukewarm reviews, but they will put on a good show so you should check them out at the Annex.
10/02 The Acorn The Frequency, 10PM, $10, 21+, more info
Indie Rock
This Canadian band has released their new album No Ghost this summer and they will be a nice tranquil indie folk band to check out at The Frequency.  They have some driving guitar beats that lay down long tracks that are slow and moody and beautiful.  They would be a fun band to check out on Saturday.

Kitty used to be a Goth--almost
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture. I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons. 1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels. 2) I used to...

World's Worst iPod: Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc
This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

World's Worst iPod: It's a Miracle by Barry Manilow
It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
A Fine Monday Afternoon
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, it is another gorgeous Monday, fit for another great show at the Crystal Corner tonight. Through locking ourselves in the barn on Irish Lane, tossing some ideas around, as well as a few choice beverages to...

Hey everybody, we were thrown for a loop by the twist this week, but were able to make one of our "oldie but a goldie" songs fit the mold. We have a few songs that we have played consistently over the years, and we are very happy that we will be...
