"Reuse" vs "Recycle"

Most people will use the terms "reuse" and "recycle" interchangeably, but both have very different impacts on our environment. When something is recycled, it is stripped down to its raw materials, which are then used in the construction of a new product. One example is the plastic from a water bottle being melted and used to make something new.  Recycling is clearly beneficial in that it keeps garbage from landfills and reduces the need to harvest new materials. It does have its downsides however. It takes a substantial amount of energy to transport and strip these raw materials and then reconstruct them into something new. A good solution, but not the best.

Reusing, on the other hand, avoids these downsides. When reused, an item is utilized again in its original form. In the example of the plastic water bottle, the bottle can be refilled with water over and over again. This has many benefits. You save money by not buying a new bottle of water and the bottle does not need to be transported to a recycling facility, reduced, transported again, reconstructed, repackaged, and shipped to a store. If you have no need for the bottle, there may be someone else out there who does. Many items can be reused, and there is always someone who is willing to reuse them. So while recycling is a great option in many cases, start to think about what items you can use again instead of tossing in the blue bin and make the world a better place.
