[Recommended] Drive By Truckers, September 28th at The Majestic

Tomorrow night the members of drive by truckers will be headlining at the Majestic Theater! The band was founded by long time friends Patterson Hood (son of bassist David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section) and Mike Cooley back in 1996. Since the band’s beginning, members have rotated in and out but the music has been consistently noteworthy. It’s easy to see their home state of Georgia influences their work. History, folklore, politics, and character studies are prevalent in their music all from a southern perspective. Drive by Truckers have released 8 studio albums to date with a 9th due out in late 2010. Additionally they have released two live albums and Barr Weissman featured them in The Secret to a Happy Ending, a documentary showcasing the struggles of the group. They seem to have found their niche in concept albums with 2001’s Southern Rock Opera, 2003’s Decoration Day and 2004’s The Dirty South. Southern Rock Opera has undoubtedly been their most successful album.  Hood used his fascination of 70’s rock as a means of analysis of the cultural deterioration of the South during that era. It earned them a four star review from Rolling Stone. Drive by Truckers are most noted for their use of a muscled three-guitar attack evocative of Lynyrd Skynyrd. This style does wondrous things for their country rock feel.  With all the genius musicians the band has developed a knack of telling a great story with their music. The journeys of the songs’ protagonists are perfectly coupled with appropriate rock and roll bounce or melancholy country blues riffs. At times gritty and gravelly and others slick and sweet, it’s hard not to fall for that southern charm that streams from their tunes. Come rock out with me when Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, John Neff, Brad Morgan, Shonna Tucker and Jay Gonzalez hit the stage at the Majestic tomorrow night!
