[Recommended] Dawes, Nov. 12th, The Majestic Theater

Dawes November 12th, The Majestic Theater, 8pm, $12 in advance/$14 day of show, more info at www.majesticmadison.com Who are they? Dawes is made up of members Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber and Alex Casnoff.  Originally the group was called Simon Dawes and had an extra member, Blake Mills.  Mills bowed out of the group and took with him the their post-punk style.  The guys are from an area of Los Angeles known as North Hills (they love the place so much they named their debut album after it.)  While the group has enjoyed some major nods, particularly from Rolling Stone, they still remain low key.  I think their success is only going to increase and it will be fun to see them grow with it. What kind of sound? Inspired by fellow Californians, Dawes went to Laurel Canyon to record their first album.  Above all else, they wanted their music to be authentic.  As front man Taylor explains it "when you're listening to a guitar it sounds like a guitar, when you're listening to an organ it sounds like an organ."  Both Taylor and Wylie are fans of soul music and that has had a great influence on their sound.  Like their peers from Laurel Canyon, Dawes has excelled in the folk rock genre.  They have an incredible earthy, rootsy sound no matter the tempo of the song.  Lyrical content is incredibly important to me and Taylor Griffin proves to be a master with words.  His lyrics have meaning and depth and his vocals bring the emotions and truth to the forefront.  I think the video for When My Time Comes represents this group at their best.  Take a look: What are their best songs? -When My Time Comes -Love is All I Am -Bedside Manner Why should you go see them?  -Fans brag their live shows are even better than their record -Dawes has proved to be an original, breakout artist in their style.  They aren't like all the other folk-rockers but they put their own spin on a great genre.  -This band is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse so don't miss them in their humble beginnings!

World's Worst iPod: Torn Between Two Lovers by Mary MacGregor
Today's song was written by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. It was inspired by the 1957 novel Doctor Zhivago. No one was inspired by the song this morning. It was rejected by almost all the listeners.
Kitty used to be a Goth--almost
Today is World Goth Day, a day to celebrate the post-punk, anti-establishment, dark clothes-wearing subculture. I'm pretty sure I was a Goth for at least for little while, for two reasons. 1) I almost hardly ever wear pastels. 2) I used to...

World's Worst iPod: Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc
This morning it seemed like just about everyone was in the mood for some Funky Cold Medina...except Kitty. This ridiculous song made it all the way to number 3 in 1989. Jonathan says any song that references advertising dogs from the 80's has got...

World's Worst iPod: It's a Miracle by Barry Manilow
It's a miracle that both Jonathan and KItty wanted to hear Barry Manilow this morning. They were not alone. Plenty of Fanilow's called in to vote yes. One caller claimed to have seen Manilow in concert 25 times!
