[Concert Review] Playing for Change, Nov 9th, The Overture Center

Special thanks to trueendeavors.com for this amazing performance! It was really an experience to see all of these people together sharing their histories and culture and bringing their differences together to make great music.  Each member introduced themselves and where they were from which was also represented by their nations flags wrapped around their microphones or instruments.  Before songs they gave a little background about its origins and meaning.  Then while they were playing all the members would groove and dance completely inspired by the music.  They did a couple of songs in their respective native languages and though I am no proficient in African languages, my lack of familiarity didn’t take anything away from the performance.  The tone and emotion of the song was still apparent, proving that music really is universal. The music they played ranged from Afro-pop to New Orleans style blues and for a while they “took us back to the church” playing songs like This Little Light of Mine.  The very cultured man behind me deduced “I think this is what they call that world music.”   The group used loads of instruments along with typical ones.  A variety of drums, a cow bell and maracas were combined with keyboards, two guitars and a bass to enhance their sound.  Having such a large group of people made for a really dynamic sound.  It also gave the group ample opportunity to have a jam session and take some solos to highlight their talents.  One of the highlights of the show was singer and lone female of the group, Titi Tsira of Guguletu, South Africa.  She did an A cappella solo and blew me away.  Her voice had so much soul and power it was impossible to ignore.  Her voice flew over a range of notes to produce a beautiful melancholy song that moved the audience.     The show closer was a great choice.  They ended the show with a fun and appropriate cover of Bob Marley’s Three Little Bird.  I love that song and hearing it will all of the African and blues influence made it sound amazing.
